Favorite Character Friday: Niles

FCF has changed! I think there are way too many great characters out there to limit them to just books so start talking about your favorite characters from movies, tv shows, AND books. Show me your favorites!

Favorite Character Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Adria's Musings & Reviews that gives readers a chance to celebrate their favorite characters, because with millions of books, tv shows, and movies out there and more coming out constantly, characters are like potato chips, you can't have just one.

How it works: Every week highlight one of your favorite characters. Be sure to include where they’re from (Book, TV Show, Movie) as well! Share the love and maybe someone will check it out and see why that character is one of your favorites! Unlike the Book Boyfriend meme (which was a great meme), your Favorite Character Fridays choice can be male or female and can be from TV or Movies!

Favorite Character: Niles Crane

Where Can We Meet This Character? Frasier the tv series.
Why is this character your favorite (Feel free to include a favorite quote or scene)? Niles is hilarious with his nitpicky, frou-frou, over the top sophistication and sarcasm. The younger brother of the title character, Niles had some of the best lines and scenes in the show’s entire run. I love his dry wit, even as a roll my eyes at how fussy he is.

Out of all the characters on the show, Niles is easily the most entertaining. He spent YEARS secretly (or not so secretly depending on what character you ask) pining for Daphne, the personal physical therapist to the Crane family patriarch Martin. Some of his funnier scenes and dialogue stem from his obsession with her.

Naturally I can’t forget his extreme competitiveness with his brother Frasier which often lead these two down some rather childish moments. These are laugh-out-loud-omg-I-can-relate scenes despite how utterly ridiculous the Crane brothers got. Niles and Frasier CANNOT work together to save their lives. Everything they try turns into a big, fat argument that usually has them burning, blowing up, or having a rather childish physical fight. This clip is one of many in which Frasier and Niles try to work on a project together (In this case they are trying to write a book about sibling relationships) and end up fighting in one way or another. This kind of parallels my earlier relationship with my own younger sibling.

Of course, I can’t love Niles without complimenting the actor that portrayed him for 11 seasons, David Hyde Pierce. He is so brilliant in this role that he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Emmy ELEVEN years in a row, winning in 1995, 1998, 1999, and 2004.

Niles Crane’s snootiness is as endearing as his many allergies and physical limitations.
