Favorite Character Friday: Faith!

FCF has changed! I think there are way too many great characters out there to limit them to just books so start talking about your favorite characters from movies, tv shows, AND books. Show me your favorites!

Favorite Character Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Adria's Musings & Reviews that gives readers a chance to celebrate their favorite characters, because with millions of books, tv shows, and movies out there and more coming out constantly, characters are like potato chips, you can't have just one.

How it works: Every week highlight one of your favorite characters. Be sure to include where they’re from (Book, TV Show, Movie) as well! Share the love and maybe someone will check it out and see why that character is one of your favorites! Unlike the Book Boyfriend meme (which was a great meme), your Favorite Character Fridays choice can be male or female and can be from TV or Movies!

Favorite Character: Faith LeHane

Where Can We Meet This Character? She is from the tv show Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Why is this character your favorite (Feel free to include a favorite quote or scene)? Here’s the thing, Faith isn’t a good girl. At least, she wasn’t in the beginning. She was the anti-Buffy, the reflection of what Buffy would be like without a loving mother, loving friends, and all that positive stuff that made Buffy so great. Faith had no family, no friends, and her watcher was murdered. So Faith went in search of Buffy in hopes of bonding over being the only two slayers in the world (Why were there two? Well quick explanation: Buffy “died” in a previous season which activated the next slayer, Kendra but Buffy didn’t stay dead, she was brought back meaning that there were now two slayers in the world. When Kendra was killed, that activated the next slayer, Faith.).

Anyway, Faith’s jealousy over Buffy’s seemingly perfect life that included a vampire boyfriend (Angel) but that wouldn’t include her drove her a bit mad. She aligned herself with the enemy, tried to seduce Buffy’s boyfriend away and when that didn’t work she tried to kill him, and oh yeah, swapped bodies with Buffy (Caused A LOT of damage in Buffy’s personal life) and finally experienced the love and support Buffy had which in turn made Faith hate herself even more.

That was just a few episodes. Then she went to L.A. to cause trouble for Buffy’s vampire, now ex-boyfriend. In the end though, that same vampire became a solid friend to Faith, forcing her to take responsibility for her actions (She goes to prison for murder) and helps Faith turn her life around. Years later, Faith breaks out of prison to help a troubled Angel and from there returns to where it all started to help Buffy and her friends win a seemingly unwinnable fight.

I’m glossing over a lot of great parts in Faith’s evolution but really what I love about her is how complicated she was. She wasn’t a good girl like Buffy but she wasn’t pure evil either. She was troubled, and while she was arrogant enough about being a slayer, she suffered from low self esteem as a person.

She really went through the gauntlet of emotions from villain to reluctant heroine.

As much as the show was about Buffy, I liked Faith a lot more because of her flaws, and how all that strength as a slayer couldn’t make up for the simple things in life that she lacked: Love and support from a group of friends.

After both Buffy and Angel went off the air, Faith’s adventures continued in the comics and to this day I still love that lonely, complicated, dangerous character to pieces. She is my favorite character from the show.
