Review: My Fair Lover by Nicole Jordan

The final book in the Legendary Lovers series is here! Kate’s changed a lot from the most annoying character in the series, to a likable one in her own book. Gotta love when that happens.

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Ballantine
Release Date: August 29, 2017

Lady Katherine Wilde believes she has crushed any lingering romantic feelings toward Brandon Deverill, who spurned her six years ago. And now that the rough-edged rogue needs polishing to claim his inheritance, she’s willing to strike a practical bargain: Kate will mold the brash privateer into an acceptable English nobleman if Deverill will safeguard her from brigands on a voyage to recover lost family treasure. However, the soul-melting kiss that seals their agreement just may reignite blazing passion.

Brandon’s fortitude was sorely tested when he turned Kate away from his bed all those years ago. Even a rake such as he wouldn’t seduce an innocent beauty before sailing into battle. But now that he’s inherited a title and must take a suitable bride, he sets his sights on Kate. Though he fiercely desires her, true love is a notion that baffles him—until their adventure turns perilous and Brandon realizes he’d gladly trade his life to save the woman who has captured his heart.

What’s it About? Years ago American Brandon Deverill turned down Lady Katherine Wilde’s affection and left to fight in a war against England. Now he’s back and he needs Kate’s help to claim his inheritance, but at the same time he wants to see if there’s still an attraction between them. Kate however, has learned her lesson and while she agrees to help Brandon, it’s not without conditions. In exchange for helping him become an English nobleman, she wants Brandon to provide protection while she travels overseas to find a lost family treasure. Brandon also needs a suitable wife and thinks Kate would be perfect since he still desires her but Kate won’t marry without love and he doesn’t think he’s capable of that.

Overall reaction to the story? I liked My Fair Lover but I wasn’t bowled over by it. Deverill and Kate’s past had been mentioned in previous books so I was excited to read more about them and I wanted to see if the “annoying” Wilde cousin had finally grown up. She did but her romance with Deverill seemed a little one sided with him “knowing” so much about her. I did like the plot because it finally gave the Wilde cousins the closure they desperately needed with regards to the deaths of their respective parents and it took Deverill and Kate away from London for a fresh setting and a different set of conflicts. Overall, a fun read with plenty of adventure to be had.

Describe the hero in five words: Intelligent. Stubborn. Determined. Cautious. Loyal.
Did you like him? Most of the time.
Why? Brandon Deverill was in a difficult situation. He was an American who worked with the British in the past, had British friends, and even his cousin was a titled British citizen but when war broke out between England and America, Deverill fought for the Americans. Now he’s back in England to claim a title and lands and doesn’t know how he’ll be received. It was interesting to say the least. I liked the guy, sometimes I wanted to shake him and really, what was up with him being so knowledgeable about Kate’s inner workings. He wasn’t a bad guy, he just had too much power in the relationship in my opinion.

Describe the heroine in five words: Loyal. Loving. Intelligent. Caring. Fair.
Did you like her? Surprisingly yes.
Why? Throughout the whole series I’ve complained about Kate’s overzealous matchmaking (It’s like she didn’t even know the meaning of the word subtle) and her lack of maturity. Now she’s all grown up and I had to give her a fair chance at changing my mind. She did for the most part. Kate has gotten that ever so necessary reality check and it changed her from a foolish little girl into a cautious woman with brains. I liked the more mature side of Kate. She was more practical and tended think of consequences rather than doing everything “in the moment.” Kate also showed a different side of herself than in the previous books, she was kind and caring but also defiant and capable of defending herself.

Let’s talk about the romance: Here’s where I struggled a bit. Deverill and Kate have a history together, one where she offered herself to him and he flat out refused her. It made Kate more wary about him but Deverill was always so dang sure of her and her emotions. Almost like he was a mind reader. That made the romance seem less, I don’t know, less romantic I guess is what I’m trying to say. I’m tired of men who look at the women “knowingly” or smile “knowingly” as if he can divine her thoughts. I wanted Deverill to be as unbalanced emotionally as Kate. I didn’t want him to be so sure about what she was feeling or what she wanted. No matter how “educated” he was about the fairer sex, he was not a mind reader and Kate was supposed to be different than other women he had been with any way. I wanted Kate to have more of the power this time around, to put Deverill in that uncomfortable position of knowing nothing and feeling everything about Kate. Don’t get me wrong, there were a few moments where Deverill had doubts but all in all his knowing so much made him and the romance feel less passionate and more calculated. The physical chemistry was there but even that was more about him “knowing” Kate better than she knew herself which yes I get that he was more experienced in that area but still, he’s not a mind reader! He can’t know what Kate wants/needs all the time.

How about that supporting cast? Deverill and Kate spend the majority of My Fair Lover alone but there are a few scenes with Kate’s family, and Deverill’s friends including his cousin Trey whom long time fans will remember from his own story, Wicked Fantasy.

It was nice to have a quick check in with him and Antonia.

Click It or Skip It? Click It. My Fair Lover rounds out the story of the Wilde cousins quite nicely despite the fact that I felt the romance was one sided. I was glad to see that this family had the final bit of closure that they needed to move on.
