Favorite Character Friday: Leo!

Favorite Character Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Adria's Romance Reviews that gives readers a chance to celebrate their favorite characters, because with millions of books out there and more coming out every week, characters are like potato chips, you can't have just one.

How it works: Every week you pick one of your favorite characters and tell everyone WHY they're one of your favorite characters. Be sure to include the blurb and book cover as well! Share the love and maybe someone will read that same book and see why that character is one of your favorites! Unlike the Book Boyfriend meme (which was a great meme), your Favorite Character Fridays choice can be male or female!

Favorite Character: Leo Hathaway

Book Title & Author: Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas (But he appears in all the novels)

Why is this character your favorite (Feel free to include a favorite quote or scene)? When Leo is first introduced in the series he’s not a very nice person. He’s angry, bitter, and grieving the loss of his fiancĂ©e which has lead to him drinking and drugging himself constantly. However, after events in the first book he starts to recover and that’s when he becomes this lovable, devilishly charming character who loves his sisters but at the same time doesn’t try and control them or force them to adhere to strict behaviors. The following quotes appear in various books in the Hathaway series.

Amelia’s gaze went to Leo, who had hung back near the door. Win heard the quiet intake of her sister’s breath as she saw the changes in him.
“There’s my old Leo,” Amelia said softly.
Win was surprised to see a flicker of something in Leo’s sardonic expression—a sort of boyish vulnerability, as if he was embarrassed by his own pleasure in the reunion. “Now you’ll weep for a different cause,” he told Amelia. “Because as you see, I’ve come back as well.”
She flew to him, and was swallowed in a strong embrace. “The French wouldn’t have you?” she asked, her voice muffled against his chest.
“On the contrary, they adored me. But there’s no entertainment in staying where one is wanted.”

When Leo’s sisters hire a respectable companion named Catherine Marks, she’s the only one who seems immune to Leo’s charm and Leo is confused by this. At the same time he gets annoyed with Catherine because she always seems to needle him with her honesty.

It seemed that Miss Marks and Leo had found in each other the personification of everything they disliked most. Leo couldn’t stand humorless people, or judgmental ones, and he had immediately taken to referring to the governess as “Satan in petticoats.” And Miss Marks, for her part, despised rakes. The more charming they were, the deeper her loathing.

And they don't hesitate to argue back and forth even though Catherine is technically a servant. Lol.

“I’ll find your spectacles,” he said brusquely. “You have my word. If you like, you can go into the house while I keep searching.”
“No, thank you. If I tried to find the house on my own, I’d probably end up in the barn.”
Seeing a metallic glimmer in the grass, Leo reached out and closed his hand around the spectacles. “Here they are.” He crawled to Marks and faced her in an upright kneeling position. After polishing the spectacle lenses with the edge of his sleeve, he said, “Hold still.”
      “Give them to me.”
“Let me do it, hardhead. Arguing comes to you as naturally as breathing, doesn’t it?”
“No, it doesn’t,” she said immediately, and colored as he gave a husky laugh.
“It’s no fun to bait you when you make it so easy, Marks.”

I love Leo’s pragmatic but often times hilarious way of seeing a situation and the way he shows affection towards his sisters. When two of his sisters fall in love with gypsies he accepts it with a bit of bluster but also a lot of charm. He’s just one of those characters that is fun and memorable.

Book Cover/Blurb:
For two years, Catherine Marks has been a paid companion to the Hathaway sisters—a pleasant position, with one caveat. Her charges' older brother, Leo Hathaway, is thoroughly exasperating. Cat can hardly believe that their constant arguing could mask a mutual attraction. But when one quarrel ends in a sudden kiss, Cat is shocked at her powerful response—and even more so when Leo proposes a dangerous liaison.

Leo must marry and produce an heir within a year to save his family home. Catherine's respectable demeanor hides a secret that would utterly destroy her. But to Leo, Cat is intriguing and infernally tempting, even to a man resolved never to love again. The danger Cat tried to outrun is about to separate them forever—unless two wary lovers can find a way to banish the shadows and give in to their desires…
