Review: Addicted by Elle Kennedy (+ Music Selection)

So just how does a Friends-to-Lovers story go in a dystopian world created by the superbly talented Elle Kennedy? Well for one thing, it’s dirrrrrty!

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Signet
Release Date: June 28, 2016

Lennox used to live in a paradise on earth with his best friend Jamie, in a place where visitors came and went, allowing their desires to run free. But everything changes when a deadly attack forces them to take up with Connor Mackenzie's band of Outlaws. Lennox knows Jamie is hung up on someone else, but he's always believed he's the man for her—and won't let her go without a fight.

Even though Jamie is well aware that Lennox is one hot specimen of a man, she refuses to let sex ruin the most important relationship in her life. But when the object of her interest spurns her, she indulges in a little pleasure-filled revenge with her very magnetic, very willing best friend. One thrilling night with Lennox is enough to awaken Jamie's unexpected desires for him. And now that she's had a taste, she's not sure she can ever give him up...

Lennox and Jamie are a few of the survivors of an attack on their home. They’ve been lifelong friends who have always had each other’s backs and despite the underlying attraction between them, they’ve kept things platonic. When the man Jamie’s grown attached to makes his interest in another woman clear, Jamie decides to do something about her lingering attraction to Lennox. Soon the two are burning up the sheets and risking more than just their friendship.

Turn up the AC and grab that ice water because  Elle Kennedy’s gutsy, drop dead sexy style of writing is on full display in Addicted and the title perfectly describes how I felt about this book: ADDICTED. It's the second novel in the Outlaws series and it is definitely hotter than the first! You’ve been warned! This is a hotter than hell, turn you upside down in the best way kind of read! Let’s start with the cover first. It’s BLUE and it’s hella sexy! I could stare at it for hours!

Moving on though, who knew there was so much sexy hiding inside of Lennox? I mean the guy just oozes testosterone from every single pore. He was a sexual character with big appetites and let me say, he didn’t have a shy bone in his body when it came to his needs and wants but it wasn’t his um, skills that had me drooling over him. It was how much emotion Lennox had inside of him. He was a natural protector of those who were smaller and weaker than he was. In a world where only the strong survived, Lennox could have used his strength to take anything and anyone he wanted yet it never crossed his mind to take advantage of, or bully anyone smaller or weaker than him. Everything had to be 100% consensual. I loved that about him. And the sexy, let’s not forget the sexiness that is Lennox’s dirty mouth.

Jamie is going to be a hard heroine to beat because she totally represented everything a woman would have to be in order to survive and thrive in a post war world. Jamie didn’t need anyone to take care of her, she was smart, tough, and mean as hell when she was backed into a corner yet underneath that tough skin was a kind hearted, loyal woman who deserved to be loved. Jamie could think like a man one second and then deal out punishment like a woman the next. I just loved how utterly capable she was of protecting herself and carrying her own weight in a tough situation. What she knew about survival she shared with others, what she didn’t know she was quick to learn about. She never gave off the damsel in distress vibe and demanded that Lennox and everyone else treat her like an equal and someone with enough skills to contribute to whatever mission they had going on. She wasn’t the stay-at-home-and-wring-her-hands-while-the-men-went-out-on-raids type heroine. Nope, she was always ready to go too. Yeah, she’s totally going to be hard to beat.

And damn but Lennox and Jamie were dirty together in the best freaking way possible. These two had been best friends almost all their lives and Lennox looked after Jamie once their respective parents died. The attraction was always there but for the sake of their friendship they both buried it. One erotic verbal encounter and all of that lust they buried almost burns them alive. I loved every tense look, every “almost” moment, and of course these two just ignited the pages once they decided to make the jump to lovers. My favorite thing about Lennox and Jamie though was the history they had prior to becoming lovers. It’s such a harsh world they’re living in and yet here was this precious, almost pure connection they shared and it was so important to both of them that they keep that one good thing in their lives that they almost missed the chance at building something wonderful from that foundation. I found that Elle Kennedy did a wonderful job at portraying how valuable Lennox and Jamie’s friendship was and how it gave them something special that so far, none of the other characters have had.

There’s a slew of brand new characters this time around but with a world as unpredictable as the one they live in, it’s not a guarantee that they’ll all survive. Reese, the leader of another group of outlaws is one tough ass chick that I can’t wait to read about. Her mysterious bond with her always present bodyguard Sloan had me dying to know more. I liked them both even though they’re both very secretive. There was a bit more time dedicated to previous supporting characters like Rylan and Pike. That Rylan is such a charmer and doesn’t seem to take too many things seriously. Except for Reese. His almost desperate pursuit of the one woman who doesn’t fall at his feet made for some tense moments. How Reese could hold up a show of disinterest is beyond me because that Ryaln is pretty convincing!

I read the first book in the series and it was great but Addicted really blows the first book out of the water to be honest. Debauchery, violence, and general mayhem ruled the world Lennox and Jamie lived in and Elle Kennedy made sure that was never forgotten. Erotic doesn’t even begin to describe some of the scenes in this book so make sure you like your romances in the rated “R” to “X” category because Addicted is not for the faint of heart. *fans self* Inhibitions and social “norms” don’t apply in this world because there are no laws outside of the sanctioned cities. Basically, the people in this book operate on pure instinct and it takes some wild turns. I think what I loved most about this book is that there isn’t a single character in it that is innocent. Every single character has had to do things to survive and they weren’t always the right thing but it got them to where they are when this book begins. Now, whether or not all the characters introduced make it to the end is another story.

Definitely another “Best Reads of 2016” addition, Addicted was as sexy as it was gritty. Lennox and Jamie were one of the best examples of a partnership between a couple that I’ve ever read in a romance and I couldn’t get enough of them.

Final Verdict: Lennox and Jamie made it onto several of my lists including Favorite Couple. I just can’t wait for the next book in the series but in the meantime, I'm more than happy to read this book over and over again.
