Favorite Character Friday: Isabella Cale

Favorite Character Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Adria's Romance Reviews that gives readers a chance to celebrate their favorite characters!

Why a weekly meme? Because really, with millions of books out there and more coming out every week, characters are like potato chips, you can't have just one.

How it works: Every week you pick one of your favorite characters and tell every one who it is, what book they're from and WHY they're one of your favorite characters. Be sure to include the blurb and book cover as well! Share the love and maybe someone will read that same book and see why that character is one of your favorites! Unlike the Book Boyfriend meme (which was a great meme), your Favorite Character Fridays choice can be male or female!

Favorite Character: Isabella Cale

Book Title & Author: When the Rogue Returns by Sabrina Jeffries

Why is this character your favorite (Feel free to include a favorite quote or scene)? For me it’s always difficult to find good, solid heroines in historical romance because most are wilting, wimpy damsels in distress but a few authors know how to balance the time period with strong, independent women. Sabrina Jeffries is one of those authors and while I have a few of her heroines on my list, it’s Isabella Cale that stands out the most.

Isabella was a meek little mouse in the beginning of her marriage to Victor and she was gullible to a fault and life kicked her around because of it. The people around her cost years of a happy marriage to Victor but instead of being defeated by it, she became stronger because of it. I loved how she thrived and made a business out of her skills. She didn’t need anyone to rescue her and when Victor came along she didn’t hand over the reins to him. She demanded to be included in the decisions being made and on finding a solution to her problems. I loved her “equal partnership” mentality because it made HER a noticeable character among heroines who fawn, faint and fuss over the hero all while handing over any semblance of intelligence. Isabella was feisty and fun, sometimes being the brains, sometimes being the muscle but always dependable and solid.

Book Cover/Blurb:
Victor Cale never imagined that his sweet, shy bride, Isabella, would use her talent for creating exquisite imitation jewels in a criminal way. But there’s no denying that Isa’s handiwork was used in the brazen heist of the Dutch royal family’s diamonds—after she disappeared into the night.

Ten years later, still reeling from her betrayal and enraged that her duplicitous side was so undetectable, Victor is sent to Edinburgh to investigate a wealthy baron’s mysterious brideto- be. Simple enough—until the “fiancĂ©e” proves to be Isa, masquerading as an alluring young widow.

No longer the meek and mild girl he once knew, the bold woman vehemently asserts that it was Victor who abandoned her after he helped steal the royal diamonds! Piecing together the truth of the past reawakens their volatile passion, which burns hotter than ever. But with a decade of secrets between them, Victor and Isa must trust each other in order to bring the real thieves to justice—without getting burned themselves.
