Review: To Dare a SEAL by Sara Jane Stone

One dare will bring him to his knees . . .
Playing best man in his teammate's Las Vegas wedding is not U.S. Navy SEAL Jack Barnes' idea of a vacation-especially when the maid-of-honor is the one woman who knows how to push his buttons. Now his teammates are taking bets on whether he'll end up in the fiery bartender's bed. Not one to turn away from a challenge, Jack vows to seduce Natalie Lewis. And he'll do so on his terms-demanding complete control.

The tantalizing SEAL may have a hand-over-your-panties smile and a body she'd love to explore, but there's no way Natalie's falling into his bed. No, she's going to get revenge. After bringing Jack to his knees with a series of Sin City dares, she'll walk away. It's the perfect plan-until it backfires. Beneath his devil-may-care attitude, Jack's unbridled desire proves irresistible. But he also requires the one thing Natalie can't give. Control.

Natalie Lewis has control issues. Mainly, she just likes to be in control. No, she needs to be in control, so that means she decides who, when, and where she’ll take her clothes off for. She always picks men who won’t challenge her in that regard so naturally, that means that Navy SEAL Jack Barnes is out of the question. Even if she does find him attractive. Then a bet between Jack and his teammates has Natalie questioning just why she was fighting him in the first place.

Geez, and I though Natalie’s little sister Lucia carried a lot of baggage!

Natalie’s desperate need for control comes from the helplessness she endured being bounced around from foster home to foster home as a child and later, the immense guilt she felt after her little sister suffered a brutal attack from one of their foster fathers. So her control freak attitude is totally justified. It also made Jack work a lot harder to win her over which was probably a first for the charming SEAL.

These two were so bull headed I was surprised they didn’t cancel each other out completely! Natalie’s stubbornness could make a holy man to drink and Jack’s persistence could drive a person off a ledge. But that’s what made them so compatible. Jack needed a woman who wouldn’t let him steamroller over her and Natalie needed a man who wouldn’t be ground to dust under her heel.

Aside from the very obvious attraction between them, To Dare a SEAL also shows a more vulnerable side of Natalie that wasn’t easily visible. She comes across as a total hard ass which she is but as the story progressed she was less machine and more woman. That’s what I wanted to see, Natalie’s shields down and the real person exposed. Only Jack could out stubborn that woman. I liked the raw, exposed and vulnerable Natalie best. She was both interesting and relatable.

Final Verdict: Jack and Natalie’s happy ending was hard won on Natalie’s part but while she was on her way towards healing she and Jack sure did burn up those sheets! To Dare a SEAL was a fun, hot romp between a tough-as-nails bartender and a stubborn, sexy SEAL. And the cover is one of my favorites!
