Throwback Thursday Review: The Winner Takes it All by Jennifer Dawson

Throwback Thursday Reviews on the blog is dedicated to those oldies but goodies that you just can't help but talk about, in a review of course! Shed some light on some of your older favorites and hopefully you'll get someone hooked on a new book, series and/or author! If you've got an oldie but goodie, share it with me! There's no such thing as "Too Many Books!"

With the third book in this series by new to me author Jennifer Dawson just around the corner; I felt I had some catching up to do. I LOVE these characters! They’re passionate, opinionated and stubborn but they’re also loyal, loving and addictive.

For two stubborn people. . .
Corporate mogul Shane Donovan sees the ultra-cool, collected Cecilia Riley as an ice queen--even if he can't deny that, on the surface, she's a work of perfection his body can't ignore. Forced to spend two weeks in the same house for his sister's upcoming wedding, Shane senses that deep down Cecilia mirrors his need. And he's determined to draw her into a sexy game that will melt away her reserve. . .

Losing is not an option. . .
Career-driven Cecilia Riley has just enough free time in her schedule to head out of town for her brother's wedding. But her agenda is thrown for a loop by the presence of Shane. Though his over-confident attitude leaves a lot to be desired, his insanely hot body has kept Cecilia up nights. Unsure what game Shane is playing, Cecilia takes the bait, bent on resisting him at all costs.
But as Shane and Cecilia discover, temptation follows no rules. . .

With Shane Donovan’s sister marrying Cecilia Riley’s brother, the two are resigned to having to spend two weeks in the same house even though Shane thinks Cecilia is a cold hearted woman and Cecilia would rather be anywhere than in the middle of her own awkward family reunion.

Shane can’t deny that Cecilia is physically his ideal woman but he can’t understand her determination not to let her guard down, meanwhile Cecilia can’t stand Shane’s over confident attitude but deep down she’d love to get her hands all over him. With her career aspirations on the line, Cecilia tries to resist Shane but then Shane pulls out all the stops to tempt her into letting loose and being herself.

Wow, those Donovans don’t do anything by half measures, especially Shane! He’s one tall drink of something else I tell you! He was intense with a dry wit and completely unaware of how much of his success has to do with him and not the accident that almost cost him his sister. I loved this guy to pieces! He knew when to be the take charge alpha male (Which made for some really hot moments with Cecilia) and when to back off and let things happen on their own. That was my favorite thing about Shane. He didn’t try and control everything or force the people around him to do things his way. He’s a very passionate man.

To offset Shane’s personality, Cecilia is cool, reserved and has spent years locking down her real self. As silly as it sounded for a full grown woman to still crave a parent’s approval, I felt sorry for this woman. She was estranged from practically everyone who knew her, essentially isolating herself. She didn’t know what to do with affection and while she may have said or done things that were questionable, I really wanted her to find herself and to tell all the users in her life to go hang themselves. I didn’t mind that she was so career driven, just that she let someone else tell her what that career should be.

Because it was two weeks before Shane’s sister’s wedding, The Winner Takes it All had quite a few characters in it but surprisingly they didn’t take away from Shane and Cecilia’s romance. I think having such a large but well placed cast of secondary characters added much needed humor in between the intense scenes with Shane and Cecilia. Some of the most surprising facts of Shane and Cecilia’s personalities were learned from other characters. Plus, James and Gracie were just too adorable with their bickering.

Dawson created a small town romance without suffocating me with nosy neighbors and single minded behavior. Once again, with as many characters as there are in this series, they tend to mind their own business instead of constantly dispensing unwarranted advice. That’s not to say there isn’t some sisterly advice from Maddie Donovan or from Cecilia’s brother but Shane and Cecilia are pretty much left alone to solve their problems without interference. I love that.

Final Verdict: This is definitely a series I’m hoping goes on for a while even though it’s killing me to be all caught up and have to wait for each new book from now on.
