End of the Year Wrap Up + Giveaway

It’s been a pretty interesting year here on the blog. I stopped overwhelming myself and dialed down on the number of review requests I accepted and instead focused on the fact that I had access to Netgalley and Edelweiss. I also found out that my local library sucks when it comes to their romance section, both in print and e-book (Can I give back my library card?), got picked to be in the Kensington KLovers Review Crew (Epic highlight of my year), and survived a total crash/wipeout of my portable hard drive which housed, among other things, a lot of my books. After a quick pity party for the loss of my portable hard drive, I picked myself up, dusted myself off and began from scratch.

Review: Hollywood on Tap by Avery Flynn

Format: .epub (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Publisher: Avery Flynn
Release Date: November 3, 2014

For years, Sean O’Dell has hidden his past as a Hollywood heartthrob from everyone at the Sweet Salvation Brewery. However, the arrival of nosey efficiency expert Natalie Sweet threatens the status quo. It doesn’t help that with her glasses, buttoned-up sweaters and always pulled-back hair that she’s uncovered one secret already: His attraction for hot librarian types.

Natalie has had enough of the strong-and-silent Sean submarining her efforts to change the brewery for the better. She’s ready to do whatever it takes to make her vision a reality, even if that means taking down the pig-headed and too-hot-for-his-own-good brewmaster.

Sizzling attraction battles stubborn determination as Natalie and Sean go head to head in a battle that’s anything but business as usual.

In the second book of the Sweet Salvation Brewery series, author Avery Flynn brings a little romance to brew master Sean O’Dell and Natalie Sweet’s lives.

Waiting On Wednesday: Khaleesi?

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is: A Scoundrel by Moonlight by Anna Campbell

I am SO in love with this cover, almost as much as I'm in love with the series itself. Anna Campbell herself has said that she had a hand in the design of the cover: She wanted the heroine to have the same color of hair as Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones even though she's never seen the show. It's meant to be with me and this book I tell you because I am SO Team Daenerys! Does that mean that the heroine of A Scoundrel by Moonlight has a fiery personality? Because I am so down with that!

Justice. That's all Nell Trim wants-for her sister and for the countless other young women the Marquess of Leath has ruined with his wildly seductive ways.

Now she has a bold plan to take him down . . . as long as she can resist the scoundrel's temptations herself.

From the moment Nell meets James Fairbrother, the air positively sizzles. Yet for all his size and power, there's something amazingly tender in his touch. Could he really be such a depraved rogue?

The only way to find out is to beat the devil at his own game . . . one tempting kiss at a time.

Grand Central Publishing Blog Tour: Revenant by Larissa Ione (Q&A, Review & Giveaway)!

Ahhhh!!! I'm so excited today! Not only is it the release day for Revenant, the final book in the Demonica/Lords of Deliverance series but I got to ask a few questions of its author, the fabulously talented Larissa Ione! Larissa has been one of my favorite authors since I discovered Desire Unchained in a used book store. A few weeks later, Passion Unleashed was released and the rest is history!

So enjoy the quick Q&A with Larissa and be sure to answer her question at the end and of course, enter the giveaway!

About Larissa Ione:

A former meteorologist and EMT, Air Force veteran Larissa Ione now gets her daily dose of excitement from vampires, werewolves, demons, and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

She lives in wintery Wisconsin with her U.S. Coast Guard husband, her teenage son, a rescue cat, and her hellhound, a King Shepherd named Hexe.

Larissa: First, I want to thank Adria’s Romance Reviews for having me! I can’t believe Revenant is finally here, and it’s awesome to be here to celebrate!

Okay, on to the questions!

Adria: Part of the editing process is that unfortunately scenes get cut or have to be re-written. Is there an outtake you can share with us?
Larissa: Funny you mention this, because I very rarely cut scenes, but I did cut one in Revenant – the epilogue got the ax. I thought about making it into a “slice of life,” scene to put up on the Deleted Scenes page on my website or in Demonica: Overkill, but that didn’t feel right. Revenant is ending the Demonica/Lords of Deliverance arc that’s been building for 11 books, and I wanted it to have a special place on my website, along with information about where the Demonica/LOD world is going. So when readers get to the end of Revenant, they’ll see a website address that will take them to the epilogue and more information. So I can’t share anything here, but as of December 16th, it’ll be on my website!

Adria: How does it feel to have come so far with the Demonica/LoD series and have it be so well received by the fans?
Larissa: It’s been amazing. I have the most loyal, enthusiastic readers, and I am so grateful for that. I can’t believe they’ve stuck with me for 11+ books!

Adria: I know it's like asking you to choose your favorite child but DO you have a favorite character from the series?
Larissa: I don’t really have a favorite character…but I do have a favorite character to write, and that’s Wraith. He just writes himself, so I LOVE writing him.

Adria:What has been the most memorable fan experience you've had?
Larissa: Wow…there have been so many! But I’ll never forget my birthday at Authors After Dark in Philadelphia. A group of readers surprised me with a cake, and we all ended up having a fantastic impromptu party. It was an amazing experience, and I adore those gals. That, truly, is one of my favorite memories.

Adria:Would you do anything different with the series if given the chance?
Larissa: Not as far as the characters or plots. I mean, there are small things I’d change here and there, but overall, I wouldn’t do anything different. What I would do, however, is rethink how the Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series were branded and marketed. Too many people didn’t realize that the Lords of Deliverance books were a continuation of the Demonica series, and I really wish I’d thought that out a little better.

Well, thank you again for having me…these were some really great questions! Now I’m going to ask the readers the question you asked me: Do YOU have a favorite character from the series?

*I personally have a soft spot for Reseph but I've been a long time fan of Reaver as well.

ARC Review: Private Affair by Rebecca York

Format: .epub (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Release Date: January 6, 2015

Does everyone have something to hide?

Olivia Winters and Max Lyon knew each other way back when, but she was one of the cool kids, and he was a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Olivia's a successful model now, and Max a PI much in demand.

When Olivia's old high school friend is murdered-and a raft of "accidental" deaths may be murders, too-Max is the only man Olivia can trust to help her investigate.

As they team up, Max is blown away by Olivia's courage under fire, and Olivia finds that the bad boy she remembers from the fringes of her social circle might just be the best man she's ever met...

Max Lyon and Olivia Winters weren’t exactly friends back in high school. Max was from the wrong side of the popular crowd and Olivia was practically the queen of the popular crowd. Aware of one another’s existence but hardly friends, they both graduated and went their separate ways. Years later, one of Olivia’s high school friends is murdered and a string of “accidental” deaths begin to get closer and closer to Olivia herself. The only person she can turn to for help is Max, now a successful Private Investigator. As Max tries to find out who is targeting the people around Olivia, he discovers a different person than the one he knew in high school and Olivia begins to think Max just might be the one man for her.

Private Affair was a mixed bag for me. Some parts of the book didn’t work but other parts were very well done. That said, I’m writing this review in a very different format so that I can make sure my points are made.

What did work: The suspense, mystery and danger. When I read a book that promises suspense, mystery and danger then damn it, that’s what I expect! Author Rebecca York did a great job of not only making me bite my nails wondering when the villain would make their next move but keeping the identity of the villain a total secret until the last few pages! That’s not easy! In fact, a few times I found myself taking a guess at who the villain was, only to be completely surprised by the real identity at the end. The mystery of who was terrorizing these characters was the real reason I kept reading Private Affair. There’s nothing like a good mystery to keep me turning the pages!

What didn’t work: The romance and the characters. This is a big deal because Private Affair is classified as a romantic suspense novel and the romance just wasn’t there for me. Max and Olivia had close to no chemistry at all. They were more like platonic friends at times than lovers! I just didn’t connect to Max or Olivia as characters, they fell flat for me. They had such potential to set off sparks between them but they never quite reached their potential which is a shame because if they had then Private Affair would have been a big contender in the romantic suspense category.

Final Verdict: Would I recommend this book? Yes but maybe not to romance fans. I think readers who enjoy suspense/thrillers would enjoy Private Affair more than romance fans. Of course, if you like your romance on the light side with a heavy dose of danger and mystery then by all means pick up a copy of this book and enjoy!

I haven't done this meme in such a LOOONG time folks! I say it's time to get back into those memes!

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is: Total Surrender by Rebecca Zanetti

Why wouldn't I pick this book? I'm so in love with this series and I feel like, as a fan I've waited FOREVER to find out just what happened to the fourth Dean brother, Jory. I'm experiencing that happy/sad feeling that all romance fans do when the last book in a series is going to come out. I'm happy that March 31, 2015 is closer than it was at the beginning of this year but I'm also sad because it's the last book, the last Dean brother! What the heck am I going to do when that world is over?!

Show/tell me what you're waiting on this week! Have you read the Sin Brothers series yet (If not, what are you waiting for?)?

A fight he must win . . .

Piper Oliver knows she can't trust him. They warned her that the tall, dark, and sexy black-ops soldier Jory Dean would try to win her over with his steel-gray eyes and deadly charm, but she won't be conned by this man they call a traitor. All she has to do is figure out the science necessary to save his life, and she's done. Something isn't adding up, though, and she won't rest until she uncovers the truth-even if it's buried in his deep, dangerous kiss.

A passion she can't resist . . .

Jory will do anything to reunite with and save his brothers-even kidnap the gorgeous woman who's working to deactivate the deadly chip in their spines. But the forces determined to destroy his family won't let them go so easily. Keeping Piper alive is more than he bargained for-and so is his burning desire for her. But with every second bringing him closer to certain death, can he afford to lose himself in her hot and willing embrace?
