ARC Review: Under His Protection by Katie Reus

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: September 1, 2014

Julieta’s stalker doesn’t play by the rules

Lingerie shop owner Julieta Mederos has worked hard to get her business off the ground. Now she’s looking forward to some quality time with her friends and her big, boisterous family. But explicit texts from random phone numbers and vandalism at her shop makes it clear someone dangerous has fixated on her. Without any solid leads, the police can’t help her and she’s forced to turn to the last man she wants to depend on.

…but neither does Ivan.

Former Army Ranger and newest Red Stone Security employee Ivan Mitchell has gotten used to being alone in the world. He never even thinks about it anymore—until he meets sexy, independent Julieta. She’s everything he could ever want…but she seems determined to keep him at arm’s length. Until now. Maybe the cops can’t do anything to protect her, but he can. When things escalate faster than even he expected, he finds himself pulling out his most extreme combat skills to protect her. He’ll do what it takes to save her life—and prove to her she belongs in his.

I totally love this series! Romance, action, suspense and a mysterious villain? What's not to love?

Shop owner Julieta Mederos loves her life and her family. Her business is doing well years of hard work and now she’s planning on spending some well earned time with her family and friends. Her plans are brought to a screeching halt when she begins receiving explicit, threatening texts and her shop is vandalized. Help comes in the form of the newest Red Stone Security employee Ivan Mitchell.

Ivan is used to being an outsider but when he meets Julieta he finds himself wanting to be more than another person passing through her life. When she finds herself the subject of a deranged stalker, he doesn’t hesitate to offer her his protection. As the violence towards Julieta escalates, she and Ivan grow closer and wonder if the attraction between them is just temporary or something more permanent.

I really like this series by author Katie Reus because it not only has great chemistry between characters, but all the books are around 45,000 words which isn’t too long or too short. It’s just enough to satisfy a craving for a hot and sexy romantic suspense. I can fit in one of these books in between longer reads and they provide the perfect getaway without keeping me away from any unfortunate chores I have to do.

The sexual tension between Ivan and Julieta definitely didn't hurt Under His Protection in the least either! Those two burn up the pages with just a few words and looks. Ivan's immense sex appeal had me wishing he was mine. So imagine my disappointment when I finished the story and crash landed back into reality. There might have been some tears involved.

For me, the best part of Under His Protection was the secrecy surrounding Julieta's stalker! I hate it when too much is given away at the beginning, it takes the suspense and enjoyment out of the entire story! I want to be kept on edge and wondering who the villain is and Katie Reus did just that! The unknown identity of the antagonist upped my overall enjoyment of the story.

Final Verdict: Under His Protection provides an even level of romance and true suspense without the length. Great for readers who don't have much time for a long novel but still want the feeling of one.
