Review: When the Marquess Falls by Lorraine Heath

Guys, this novella broke my heart to pieces. There was so much love between George and his Linnie and it defied everything! I’m so upset I haven’t read the previous books in the series. They’d make great Throwback Thursday reviews.

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Avon Impulse
Release Date: March 14, 2017

The long-anticipated and utterly extraordinary tale of the Mad Marquess that proves love truly does last forever

The Marquess of Marsden always follows the rules. Expected from birth to adhere to decades of tradition, he plans to marry a proper young woman from a good family. But when a beautiful, and completely unsuitable, woman snags his heart, he begins to realize that to get what you want, sometimes you have to break the rules.

Linnie Connor dreams of the independence of running her very own bakery. And while she may be allowed to be a marquess’ childhood companion, the baker's daughter never ends up with the handsome nobleman. Determined to achieve at least one of her dreams, Linnie makes plans to leave her sleepy village for London, intent on purging him from her heart. And yet, when an invitation to the Marsden annual ball arrives, she can't refuse her one chance to waltz in his arms.

It will be a night that stirs the flames of forbidden desires and changes their lives forever.

I’m not going to lie, I had no idea what to expect when I started When the Marquess Falls. I’ve read Lorraine Heath before but I am unfamiliar with the Hellions of Havisham Hall series. I didn’t expect this novella to completely break my heart TWICE, or to have such a bittersweet ending.

The story itself is about George, the Marquess of Marsden and Linnie Connor, the baker’s daughter. If you’re like me and aren’t familiar with their story, it’s apparently been shown through snippets in the previous books in the series just what happened between the two. Anyway, George and Linnie meet as children and become friends. As adults social standing forbids them to be anything other than Titled Lord and Servant but George has since fallen in love with Linnie and she with him. Convinced that the upcoming Christmas will be the last time he sees her because she’s planning on moving to London to open her own bakery, George invites her to his mother’s annual ball where things change between them and a tragic but enduring love builds the foundation for the heroes of the previous books.

Technically When the Marquess Falls is a prequel to the Hellions of Havisham series but it’s listed as book #3.5. My goodness but this story took my emotions on a rollercoaster! Apparently in the earlier books, George is known as the Mad Marquess and halfway through this novella you find out the heartbreaking reason why. As if that wasn’t enough, George experiences a second life changing event when he is left in charge of three boys. Ugh, I don’t want to spoil anything for you guys but man, I cried! I hardly ever cry but Lorraine Heath went there and put George through hell. I loved him and I loved Linnie. It was so clear that these two were always meant to be together and that nothing would ever keep them apart. It was a beautifully told romance that had a different sort of happy ending. But only after a lot of tears. I don’t make a habit out of reading these types of stories but this one was one that I’m so glad I was able to read. The love George and Linnie shared was immense and in a way I’m glad Heath saved this story for last because if she hadn’t, every single couple in the series would have been overshadowed by the story of the Mad Marquess and his wife.
