Tasty Blog Tour: Havoc by Jamie Shaw

Good morning everyone! Are you ready for another week?

About Jamie:
A resident of South Central Pennsylvania, JAMIE SHAW's two biggest dreams in life were to be a published author and to be a mom. Now, she's living both of those dreams and loving every minute of it.

When she's not spending time with her husband and their young son, she's writing novels with relatable heroines and swoon-worthy leading men. With her MS in Professional Writing and a passion for all things romance, her goal is always to make readers laugh, cry, squirm, curse, and swoon their pants off, all within the span of a single story.

She loves interacting with readers, and she always aims to add new names to their book boyfriend lists.

Q&A with Jamie Shaw

How did you come up with the characters for the story?
Most of the characters came out of my head, but Mike, the hero, was originally inspired by my own husband! When I wrote the first book in this series, I never envisioned it being a series. It was only the second story I ever wrote, so I couldn’t even dream that big yet (my agent and publisher were the ones who saw its potential!). So when I wrote all of the band guys, I wrote them as side characters, and Mike possessed a lot of the same characteristics as my husband—he was the loner of the group, he had a witty sense of humor, he had beautiful brown eyes, he was passionate and committed, he loved pizza and beer and video games. I plugged my husband’s name in as a placeholder, but then I waited too long to change it. The name “Mike” just stuck, and eventually, Mike Madden the character grew into his own unique person—even if he and my husband have quite a bit in common. ;)

What are you favorite types of stories to read?
I love reading stories with romance and happy endings! Regardless of if its Young Adult, New Adult, Paranormal, etc. (all my favorites), I love having that satisfied feeling at the end. The kind that just makes you deflate with a long, happy, satisfied sigh. And I always try to give my readers that same feeling with my own stories.

Describe yourself in five words or less.
Driven. Passionate. Busy. Caring. Layered.

What gave you the most trouble with this story?
Writing a villain was new for me, and even though she (Danica) turned out spectacularly evil, she was a real b*tch to write, in ALL senses of the word. Haha. I knew that Mike and Hailey were meant to be together, but how could I make it happen when Danica wouldn’t get out of their way? It was a challenge to make Hailey and Mike’s relationship grow organically and meaningfully without crossing that “cheating” line—a hard line I knew from day one it would not suit them to cross—so writing this story involved a lot of pre-planning and tiptoeing and thought. Ultimately, the challenge that Danica presented ended up giving so many extra layers to Hailey and Mike’s relationship, and it made their love story that much deeper.

What do you like to do when you aren't writing?
When I’m not writing or chasing after my year-and-a-half old son, I love interacting with my readers! I try to respond to every single email and message, and I have a reader group on Facebook, called Jamie’s Rock Stars, that I’m very active in. My readers have told me that they love how much I interact with them, and honestly, it’s one of my absolute favorite parts of this job, so I do it as often as I can. I don’t just write for the sake of writing—I write because I love knowing that people are out there reading my books, and I really enjoy connecting with those people and getting to know them.

When Hailey Harper left her family farm to enroll in veterinary school, she had a plan: keep her head down, ace her classes, and most importantly... don’t upset the uncle paying her tuition. Translation? Don’t piss off his dramatic, self-absorbed daughter, Danica, even if she’s a nightmare to live with.

Falling in love with her cousin’s rock star ex-boyfriend was definitely not part of the plan.

As the drummer of a now-famous rock band, Mike Madden could have any girl he wants. He’s sweet, funny, romantic, talented—and the only guy that’s ever made Hailey’s heart do cartwheels in her chest. The more she gets to know him, the harder she falls, but Hailey knows they can never be more than friends… because Danica wants him back, and she’ll fight dirty to win.

Mike is falling for Hailey too, but Danica’s threats and his rock star life—music video shoots, international tours, obsessed fans—could tear them apart before they’ve even begun. Hailey isn’t sure she’s the one for him, but Mike’s waited years for a girl like her… and he’ll do anything to prove it.

What’s it About? Hailey Harper has a chance to achieve her dream of becoming a veterinarian, her uncle is willing to pay for her tuition and her housing but there’s a catch. Her housing comes in the form of sharing a place with her dramatic, selfish, shrew of a cousin Danica. So far Hailey’s been able to deal with the brat but when Danica decides to win back her ex-boyfriend, Mike for purely selfish reasons, she decides to drag Hailey along to one of his band’s concerts. As the drummer for a band poised for epic fame, Mike Madden can have any girl he wants but when he meets Hailey he recognizes her as the one he’s been waiting for his whole life. But Hailey is stuck between a rock and a hard place because Danica will stop at nothing to get Mike back and she’s indirectly responsible for whether or not Hailey will be able to continue her studies. Adding to the complications, Hailey isn’t sure she’s cut out to be a rock star’s girlfriend.

Describe the hero in five words: Charming. Funny. Romantic. Smart. Caring.
Did you like him? Yes.
Why? Well Havoc is told from Hailey’s point of view so her opinion is swayed by her feelings for Mike BUT from what she sees and hears, he’s a catch. I loved the lack of an ego on him which is usually the norm for rock stars. He really did come off as a regular guy who just happened to be recognizable by millions of people around the world. I couldn’t help falling a little in love with Mike myself because he’s just so sweet, and honest about his feelings towards Hailey which was another thing that set him apart from typical rock stars. He was so adorable with her that I was getting a bit jealous of Hailey by the end of the story.

Describe the heroine in five words: Caring. Shy. Intelligent. Determined. Diffident.
Did you like her? Sort of.
Why? Apart from having an awesome name, Hailey loved animals and it showed in big ways, the first being that she was willing to put up with her bratty cousin Danica in order to have her tuition paid for so that she could become a veterinarian, the second was how much heart and soul she put into volunteering with rescued dogs. She embodied all the emotions that I always feel when it comes to abused or neglected animals. I could relate to her on that level. Hailey was super kind hearted too, always putting the happiness of others ahead of herself.

Which was great for the most part but she honestly allowed Danica’s passive aggressive, manipulative, and downright abusive behavior go on far too long. Hailey would often rationalize or excuse Danica’s awful behavior with some weak excuse that even she didn’t completely believe. The biggest thing that bugged me about Hailey though was how insecure she was! A little insecurity can make a character better but I got tired of Hailey always going on and on about how she wasn’t good enough for Mike, how she wasn’t as beautiful as Danica, or worse, how often she wanted to cry because she wanted Mike but listed all the reasons why it would never work. It was annoying how many times Mike had to reassure her that she was good enough, beautiful enough, smart enough, etc. By the end I wanted to kick Hailey and tell her to just walk away from Mike for good because no one deserves to be with someone that they have to constantly reassure. However, just as I was about to write this girl off as a total loss, she did a rather unbelievable about face and started believing in herself and fighting for what she wanted. It was too little too late for me but I did enjoy seeing her put that pain in the butt cousin in her place in a good way.

How convincing were the main characters as a couple? Mike and Hailey had a connection that wasn’t instantaneous but took a natural progression. At first I was confused as to why the author would make it look like Mike and Danica were actually going to get back together again but it had a purpose and helped build the tension between Mike and Hailey and added to the growing conflict that Hailey already had with her cousin. It took awhile for the sparks to fly between them but when they did they really flew. The best part of Havoc to me was that Mike was always open and ready for love. He never saw his growing relationship with Hailey as just physical or a way to pass the time, he knew that there was more than a chance he was going to fall in love with Hailey and he embraced it. The tenderness and genuine affection between the two made them so perfect for one another.

Is there a “Scooby Gang” worth mentioning? I’m guessing that Mike’s band mates all had their stories told already but their girlfriends bonded with Hailey and played an important part in her growing confidence. I loved the way they joked with Hailey and accepted her into their little group. These girls were funny and provided a lot of the humor.

How “Lost” did you get in the story? Havoc is told in first person pov (Hailey’s) and while I enjoyed it, I would have loved to have gotten into Mike’s head once in awhile. I love that the story wasn’t burdened by multiple conflicts or over the top angst, it was one problem and it was big enough to carry the plot and allow Hailey to grow. I did have a problem with how long it took Hailey to grow up and take charge of her life though and she drove me a bit nuts with her constant need for reassurance.
