Throwback Thursday Reviews: Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis

Throwback Thursday Reviews is dedicated to those books that have been around for years but you’ve only recently discovered. They’re the “New but Old” reads that are just too good NOT to talk about because there’s no such thing as “Too Many Books!”

This Week’s Throwback Thursday Book is: Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis

Format: Print (Gifted. Yay!)
Publisher: Forever Romance
Release Date: October 1, 2010

In one fell swoop, Maddie loses her boyfriend (her decision) and her job (so not her decision). But rather than drowning her sorrows in bags of potato chips, Maddie leaves L.A. to claim the inheritance left by her free-spirited mother—a ramshackle inn nestled in the little coastal town of Lucky Harbor, Washington.

Starting over won't be easy. Yet Maddie sees the potential for a new home and a new career—if only she can convince her two half-sisters to join her in the adventure. But convincing Tara and Chloe will be difficult because the inn needs a big makeover too.

The contractor Maddie hires is a tall, dark-haired hottie whose eyes—and mouth—are making it hard for her to remember that she's sworn off men. Even harder will be Maddie's struggles to overcome the past, though she's about to discover that there's no better place to call home than Lucky Harbor.

What’s it About? Maddie and her two half sisters have inherited a rundown inn located in the town of Lucky Harbor. Maddie sees it as an opportunity to start her life over but her sisters want nothing to do with the inn. Maddie manages to convince them to fix the inn up and think about staying and running it together and they agree to think about it so she hires contractor Jax Cullen whose tall, dark, and sexy vibe messes with Maddie’s resolution to stay away from men for awhile. While the inn is being fixed, Maddie is determined to overcome her past while Jax is determined to help her. In the process Maddie finds a lot more than she originally bargained for.

Yay or Nay? Well I liked the first book in the Lucky Harbor series but I didn’t love it. So a little of both.

Why? The setup was great and I loved Jax. He was a tall glass of Hubba, Hubba with a side of Take me I’m yours! The small town vibe was clearly present from start to finish and even came with the town gossip in the form of the brassy Lucille whom I just adored. She didn’t do anything in half measures and she told things like they were. Then there were Jax’s friends, Ford and Sawyer who make sure to make Jax’s life miserable when they can. There was plenty to laugh at when those three were together. Maddie was okay. She was nicknamed “The Mouse” and boy did she live up to that name for most of the book. Sometimes her mousy attitude got to me though but it was actually when she and her two half sisters, Tara and Chloe were in the same scene together that was kind of a turn off.

See, these three didn’t really know each other and had such different personalities that they clashed, especially Tara who was the oldest, and Chloe who was the youngest and “The Wild One” of the three. Now I’m all for conflicts between characters because it can be crucial to the characters’ growth but dang the bickering between Tara and Chloe was exhausting and just a plain turn off. All their arguing didn’t serve a purpose in my opinion other than to tire me out and make me skip ahead to when they weren’t arguing but given that the story revolves around the three sisters learning to be a family there was quite a bit of page skipping involved.

Click It or Skip It: Despite the constant quarreling between Maddie’s sisters I enjoyed Simply Irresistible. I liked the town of Lucky Harbor for the most part and my favorite supporting character was definitely Lucille. She’s a hoot!

  1. This one I felt the same way about. I still haven't continued the series but I love all her other work so eventually I will. I did love the side characters :)
