What We Watched: The Final Episodes of 2015!

Okay so another of my hobbies is watching television shows. I don't do this as often because I really can't stand reality shows and that's all there is now. However, there are a few shows that have snagged my attention and while these weekly posts aren't reviews per say, I thought it might be fun to share my thoughts on each week's episodes.

My tv partner is always Mr. Pud and he ALWAYS has something to say either in a look, gesture or in simply taking some of my snacks for himself.

I hope you'll share with me YOUR thoughts on not just these shows but your own favorites too!

*** Just a warning though. Given that these are not reviews but commentaries on each show, expect SPOILERS.

My thoughts for the week of: December 7, 2015

Show: The Muppets
Episode Title: Single All the Way
Cast: Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo, Pepe the King Prawn,
Channel and Time: Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC (Before Fresh off the Boat)
Episode Summary:

My Thoughts: A Christmas episode with the Muppets is hardly complete without some songs and we definitely got that! It was fun watching them all scramble to put together a Christmas episode of Piggy’s show which included a tone deaf Mindy Kaling.

When Fozzie comes to Miss Piggy for advice after his girlfriend Becky breaks up with him, Piggy advises that he get “stuff” to make himself feel better and even starts him off with a collection of things. Fozzie’s response is to point out that while Piggy has all this neat “stuff” she is still alone and suffering heartbreak. That causes a rare moment of self reflection for the normally confident diva and it was nice to see that Miss Piggy does miss Kermit. For a while there I thought she was more angry over him dumping her than anything else.

In the meantime the office’s Secret Santa gift exchange is in full swing, with Yolanda the rat receiving all the gifts. Apparently last year she had been excluded by mistake and she wants to make up for that by making sure EVERYONE drew her name. It doesn’t take long for Pepe and Rizzo to figure out what’s going on and instead of getting upset, they, along with the rest of the gang apologize to her and give her the gifts they bought.

All in all a decent holiday episode but I think with so many Muppets and the writers trying to fit them all in each episode there’s no more than one or two minutes spent on fan favorites. I’d like to see more character centered episodes.

And dear stars in the heavens, Chip scares the bejeezus out of me. Who’s bright idea was it to come up with him????

Episode Summary:

My Thoughts: My emotions were all over the place with the winter finale of Agents of SHIELD but that doesn’t take away from some of the “Grrr’s” I had with it. First off,

The Good
+ This episode should have been titled Closure because in some ways it did provide that.

+ We got a glimpse of an all Inhuman team but we’ll have to see if that team fully forms and if Daisy has what it takes to be a leader and make the tough calls that she’s seen people like Coulson, May and now Mack have to make.

+ I loved seeing each of the Inhumans use their abilities as part of a team. Heck I liked seeing lone wolf Lincoln as part of a team and having him and Joey be kind of like “Hey this is so cool! We’re using our powers to do some good!”

+ Lance Hunter everybody. His honest response to the question of “What if the creature from the planet comes through and can’t be killed” is “Can’t speak for everyone, but I’ll probably run.”

+ Joey all excited about his newly discovered "Bulletproof" status. I'd totally be acting like that too. It was a tense moment and he proved himself to be dedicated to doing the right thing. Lincoln on the other hand wanted to make sure our bad Inhuman stayed down except, the guy was pretty much already gone. Is it that dark side that Andrew mentioned?

+ Watching Mack in charge was pretty neat. I loved how everyone did look to him because he was the man Coulson left in charge. What was interesting was that while Mack is a good leader, he had trouble getting into the role, like he was expecting someone to come and take the decision out of his hands for a few seconds. He was used to following orders, not giving them.

+ Daisy refusing to obey Mack’s order of everyone but him leaving the castle while he waits until the last possible moment for their people to return. Her response is that they’re partners. Aww, I love these two together.

+ It was nice to see Andrew again even though he killed a bunch of Inhumans. There just HAS to be a reason he’s loose again. Lash will be even harder to catch this time around since he knows SHIELD will put him down if he tries to hurt another Inhuman. The problem is, will he hurt or kill someone we’re familiar with?

+ The end of the episode had the team reuniting again and boy was it an emotional reunion. Nothing was said but the expressions on everyone’s faces had me a little choked up. You can see how close these people have gotten, even with the newbies like Bobbi, Hunter and Mack. I was wondering if we’d ever see that kind of close bond again since Ward did a number on them not just by betraying them but by torturing and toying with them for more than one season.

+ Extra points for the very sweet Lincoln/Daisy moment. Sometimes a touch or a look means way more than just a kiss.

The Bad
+ Halfway through this episode I had everything figured out, and I do mean EVERYTHING.

+ From the moment the camera showed Will bleeding and not a sign of our mystery monster I knew that the real Will was dead. What bothered me about this was that Will died, worse, he died a HERO, making Fitz the default winner of Jemma’s affections. I’m not saying I wanted a drawn out love triangle but as I’ve pointed out before, Jemma toys with Fitz’s feelings and with Will dead it’s like she was saved from having to make that decision for herself. For me it also created some sympathy and sadness over Will’s death and I REALLY wanted to hate this guy. Now I can’t because he died making sure Jemma reached Fitz. To me that was a cheap, easy way out of an emotional entanglement for Jemma and a hollow victory for the true FitzSimmons shippers out there. It’s not enough for me to see Fitz and Jemma together, I want to know that SHE made the choice to be with him, not because Will was dead but because she knows Fitz is it for her.

+ Ward. One word. I’m telling you what happened to him was a cop out! I knew this character was headed for a downward spiral that could only end with death but this was NOT what I wanted to see folks. Of course I still have to see how this new zombified, possessed Ward creature behaves and interacts but I wanted more from this character and definitely a better fate, or a chance for redemption. I carried a big ass torch labeled “Ward’s Redemption” for a whole freaking season and while it’s now a small birthday candle, it’s still there. Brett Dalton is amazing as Grant Ward so I want to see if the writers will challenge him to bring more to this new incarnation. It seems that the creature retains the memories of its host so I’m wondering if Ward is in there somewhere or if he’s dead and gone and this “thing” is only accessing his memories.

And finally, The Sad
+ Sure, break my heart by showing Rosalind again. Go ahead and do that like you didn’t blow up my heart and my feelings last week and then stomped on the remains like yesterday’s trash. That’s okay, I like having my emotions tossed around. It’s not like I looked like a weirdo crying at the TV. Go on, show her with Coulson again just to make sure there’s nothing left of my heart. That’s okay.

+ I can’t believe I’m saying this but, I mourned for Will. I didn’t want to like this character for coming between the two geniuses but to learn that he died saving Simmons after spending YEARS surviving that “thing” on the planet? Total sympathy and sadness there. I couldn’t blame Jemma for being happy to see Fitz but devastated that he came back alone.

+ The look that Coulson and Fitz share speaks volumes because you KNOW that what they saw and did on that planet is going to change them, it’s going to cost them and it’s not going to be peaches and cream. I kinda feel like this was the final nail in Fitz’s “Innocent Lab Guy” coffin. He’s no longer the sweet, na├»ve kid he was back in season 1. He has survived the betrayal of a guy he considered a brother, had said brother try to kill him TWICE, been to an alien planet, killed men in battle and killed a creature that looked like the man his beloved Jemma was in love with. That’s gotta mess with a guy. Does it mean Fitz will also be a field agent? He’s got what it takes now so who knows?

+ And yes, I did feel sad when Coulson killed Ward. It’s complicated.

So there you have it, my thoughts on the winter finale of Agents of SHIELD. Please don’t make me think about how it doesn’t come back until March 8. My only consolation is that I’ll be watching Peggy Carter back in action in January. But still, I hate being left hanging with a story.
