Favorite Character Friday: The last of 2015!

Favorite Character Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Adria's Romance Reviews that gives readers a chance to celebrate their favorite characters!

Why a weekly meme? Because really, with millions of books out there and more coming out every week, characters are like potato chips, you can't have just one.

How it works: Every week you pick one of your favorite characters and tell every one who it is, what book they're from and WHY they're one of your favorite characters. Be sure to include the blurb and book cover as well! Share the love and maybe someone will read that same book and see why that character is one of your favorites! Unlike the Book Boyfriend meme (which was a great meme), your Favorite Character Fridays choice can be male or female!

Review: Taming the Legend by Kat Latham

Whew, this one was more emotional than previous books in the series!

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Carina Press
Release Date: May 11, 2015

When retiring rugby star Ash Trenton considered his next career move, coaching troubled teens at his ex-girlfriend’s California camp wasn’t on the list. But when Camila Morales reappears after eighteen years, begging for his help, he can’t say no to his first and only love.

Camila was just sixteen when Ash moved on to start his rugby career, leaving her heartbroken…and on her own to make a life-changing decision. Now she needs his help to win a tournament prize and save her camp. Relying on Ash is the last thing she wants. But while it’s hard to get over being dumped for a sport, it’s even harder to ignore the rush of attraction that has only gotten stronger after so many years apart.

Coaching teens is the hardest job Ash has ever had, and the task becomes personal when he begins to fall for Camila all over again. But when he is offered his dream job, will he choose the job—or the woman whose heart he already sacrificed once?

Taming the Legend may seem like a second chance love story but to me it was more of a friends to lovers story since at 16 Camila’s “love” for Ash and vice versa was more of a sweet but very deep crush instead of a red hot love affair between adults. Still, Ash did break Camila’s heart when he chose sports over her.

Review: Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds

You seriously can't go wrong with Entangled Brazen's line of hot, sexy reads. I enjoyed this book!

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )

Release Date: November 16, 2015

He'll do whatever it takes to get her against the boards…

Sidelined by a potentially career-ending injury, the only thing hockey player Ryan Douglas should be thinking about is recovery. But after sharing a near death experience and a night of passion with a spunky brunette, the only thing on his mind is five and a half feet of sexy sarcasm. And he'll do whatever it takes to get her back in his bed--even if it means playing dirty.

Chloe Jacobs is done with fairytales. And men. She's kissed her share of frogs and what's it gotten her? Dumped by text--again. Determined to eighty-six illusions of romance and prove she's more than just a good-time girl, the last thing she needs is a pushy, arrogant hockey player testing her resolve. Especially one who's sinfully good with his hands and thinks date-by-blackmail is a perfectly acceptable social convention.

Ryan wants to play games? Fine by her, but this is one faceoff he's going to lose.

Hockey player Ryan Douglas’ career was almost ended by a serious injury and his life almost ended in a late night robbery where he met a feisty albeit tiny woman who gave as good as she got. A one night stand later and Ryan can’t forget about the pint sized woman who didn’t let him get away with anything.

What We Watched: The Final Episodes of 2015!

Okay so another of my hobbies is watching television shows. I don't do this as often because I really can't stand reality shows and that's all there is now. However, there are a few shows that have snagged my attention and while these weekly posts aren't reviews per say, I thought it might be fun to share my thoughts on each week's episodes.

My tv partner is always Mr. Pud and he ALWAYS has something to say either in a look, gesture or in simply taking some of my snacks for himself.

I hope you'll share with me YOUR thoughts on not just these shows but your own favorites too!

*** Just a warning though. Given that these are not reviews but commentaries on each show, expect SPOILERS.

Review: Steal Me by Lauren Layne

Those Morettis are addictive I tell you! I breezed through this book like it was a slice of cheesecake and when I was done I felt like I was the only one who had a happy moment.

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Forever (Grand Central Publishing)
Release Date: November 24, 2015

Being a cop might be in Anthony Moretti's blood, but protecting and serving the city of New York has always been more than just the family business. If that means his love life stays locked up, well then that's just another sacrifice made in the line of duty. That is, until he sets eyes on the gorgeous new waitress at The Darby Diner and suddenly Anthony's morning coffee is leaving him a whole lot more hot and bothered than usual.

Though waitressing at The Darby isn't exactly Maggie Walker's dream job, it pays the bills and gives her time to work on her novel. Now if only she could stop fantasizing about gorgeous Anthony Moretti every time he sits down at her table, she'd really be in great shape. But when he needs her help identifying a criminal threatening The Darby-and Maggie recognizes her ex-husband-she fears her fresh start might be a pipe dream. Faster than a New York minute, Maggie and Anthony find themselves in one perilous pursuit that only gets hotter with each and every rule-breaking kiss.

I promised myself that I would not pick a favorite Moretti sibling until this series was over and they all got their stories told BUT Anthony and Maggie’s story is going to be hard to beat in my eyes!

Review: Highland Heat by Jennifer Haymore

Seriously, what is it about a tall, dark and handsome Scotsman that makes a girl swoon? I'd be happy to discuss this at length, and with pictures!

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Loveswept
Release Date: November 24, 2015

With blood still drying on the front lines at Waterloo, Lady Grace Carrington helps an injured soldier to a British medical tent. Though she believes she’s pulled him to safety, in fact she has put them both in grave danger: Because when his brilliant blue eyes meet hers, the passionate Scottish sergeant kisses her in a way that leaves her breathless and trembling. As the obedient daughter of an earl, Grace shouldn’t be tempted by someone so far below her station. But as a red-blooded woman, she longs for so much more.

As far as Duncan Mackenzie is concerned, getting stabbed in the arm was the best thing that ever happened to him. When he wakes on the battlefield, the sight of Grace’s lovely face sets his soul aflame. As an enlisted man and a farmer’s son, however, pursuing his guardian angel means facing the wrath of London society, not to mention his own superiors in the British Army. Aye, but he’d risk all that and more just to keep her in his arms.

I feel like I’ve been waiting a long time for this book and it certainly didn’t disappoint me in any way except when I got to the last page!

Physical therapist Jessica Hart has learned her lesson: Never date professional athletes. She’s been down that road, and barely recovered after the relationship crashed and burned. Then Jessica meets Gavin King. An All-Star slugger with chiseled good looks, Gavin was traded to the Sonics because he hurt his knee sliding into second, and now his future is in her hands. Gavin’s no bad boy—but he’s tempting enough to make Jessica think twice about all her rules.

Gavin is trying to find a comfortable routine. If he wants his old life back, he must take it easy, stay out of the limelight, and keep his distance from gorgeous redheaded physical therapists. The thing is, Gavin isn’t the kind of guy to sit on his ass and let other people pull his weight. And when he sees something he wants, he can’t help but fight for it, even if it means risking everything, even if it only lasts a single moment: like one kiss from Jessica.

After her relationship left a bitter taste in her mouth, Physical Therapist Jessica Hart has sworn off dating professional athletes. Then she meets Gavin King and all her pep talks and self-lectures begin making less and less sense.

Review: Make Me Stay by Jaci Burton

The next book in the Hope series is out! Have you gotten your copy yet? Very few small town romances work for me but this is one of them that does!

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Berkley Jove
Release Date: December 1, 2015

Having left his hometown of Hope years ago, only one thing could persuade architect Reid McCormack to come home for a lengthy stay—the challenge of renovating a historic building. But once the job is finished, he’ll be headed back to Boston, no matter how much he’s drawn to beautiful florist Samantha Reasor.

Samantha watches over her elderly grandmother and pours a piece of herself into every floral creation she designs. Her crush on Reid has been blooming for a while now, but she’s reluctant to act on it. A temporary fling isn’t what she’s looking for, even if Reid is smoking hot and super sexy. She wants a real, permanent, forever kind of love.

Two people with different goals couldn’t possibly work, and yet as their attraction grows into something deeper, maybe falling in love is the one thing Samantha and Reid can build a future on.

I don’t know why this is important to him now as he really doesn’t care about what I’m reading on a normal day but given that at 10 years old he still has the energy of an 8 month old puppy and a lust for MY shoes, I am not about to deny him anything so I have been informed by Mr. Pud that I MUST relate the following under pain of shoe destruction: He is still not over the fact that Make Me Stay does NOT have an adorable black pit bull like him.

*eye roll*

Yeah I don’t know when he became such a diva. Anyway, the title Make Me Stay kind of describes the story itself because the third McCormack brother has finally come back home. Of course, it’s a business related trip because that is the ONLY way Reid would ever set foot in the small town of Hope for long. Even with florist Samantha Reasor tempting him, Reid has plans to go back to Boston as soon as he’s done renovating a historic building.

My thoughts for the week of: November 30, 2015

© 2015 American Broadcasting Companies, Inc
 All rights reserved.
Show: The Muppets
Episode Title: Going, Going, Gonzo
Cast: Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo, Pepe the King Prawn,
Channel and Time: Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC (Before Fresh off the Boat)
Episode Summary: Following a duet with Miss Piggy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt heads to play poker with Scooter, Pepe and the gang; The Great Gonzo gets ready to perform his dream stunt; Dave Grohl and Animal face off.

My Thoughts: Joseph Gordon-Levitt sang with Miss Piggy! I do love it when celebrities perform with Piggy but the biggest draw of this week’s episode was the return of GONZO THE GREAT! All season there have only been small bits with my favorite blue muppet and I kept wondering why? I’m pretty sure that Gonzo was and still is one of the most recognizable icons in pop culture so why has he been treated more like an afterthought? I guess it took a sizable screw up involving Gonzo to get him his turn in the spotlight.

Seriously though, Chip has GOT TO GO! He freaks me the heck out!

The second best part of this episode was Dave Grohl having a drum faceoff with Animal. He’s a highly competitive booger and Dave Grohl’s talent is shown as well as his sense of humor. I mean, who would get into a drum war with Animal? He could either take it well or go bonkers on you if he feels slighted!

Good episode, and I loved the “Piggy Water” being promoted. It’s so Miss Piggy.

Review: Fighting for Devlin by Jessica Lemmon

Anyone up for some serious angst and first POV?

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Loveswept
Release Date: November 24, 2015

Devlin Calvary makes his own luck. Orphaned as a young child, he was taken in by a crew of bookies and gamblers—and they became his family. They’re the reason Dev’s running a trendy bistro, living in a high rise, and enjoying the good life with a string of women who never ask for too much. Until, one night, he finds out how much it hurts to trust the wrong people. . . .

Rena Lewis sticks to the straight and narrow, determined not to slip up again . . . like the terrible night of partying four years ago that ended in tragedy. A waitress at Oak & Sage, she knows that sleeping with her boss is not a smart move. But when Dev shows up on her doorstep, beat up and clearly shaken, Rena’s not about to turn him down . . . or kick him out of bed.

Dev reawakens something primal within her—a need to go wild. And Rena soon finds out that the heart she’d sealed away years ago still has the power to fight for love.

The blurb sounded promising, two wounded souls looking for a way out of the rut they’re in find each other and have to figure out whether falling in love is a benefit or a handicap. There’s the hint of hot sex, troubled waters and a bad boy whose past might drag the woman he’s falling for down.

Review: Frisk Me by Lauren Layne

Who doesn't love a surprise? I know I LOVE being surprised by a good read and that's just what happened with this book! I found a new family to love!

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was gifted to me and the decision to review it was mine. )
Publisher: Forever
Release Date: July 28, 2015

Officer Luc Moretti had no idea that his dive into the East River would have him drowning in a media frenzy. No matter how many times he tells reporters he was just doing his job, they're determined to make him into NYC's newest hero. Coming from a long line of NYPD's finest, Luc knows that being a cop has nothing to do with headlines and viral videos, and he's more than ready to get back to life away from the cameras-until he meets the gorgeous but jaded journalist assigned to film a TV special on him . . .

Ava Sims may be the only woman in NYC who isn't in love with Officer Moretti. That's why she's going after the real story-to find out about the man behind the badge. Ava's determined to keep things strictly professional, but the more time she spends around Luc, even she has to admit there's something about a man in uniform . . . and she can't wait to get him out of his.

So basically the story is that Luc, the youngest in his family that consists of his legendary NYPD dad and older brothers following the same path, is suddenly flooded with media attention after he rescues a little girl from the river. He’s not thrilled by the fact that the media wants to turn him into some kind of superhero when he was only doing his job. To make things worse, his boss is now ordering him to play nice with a journalist sent to do a TV special on him. Ava is less than impressed with the image the media has of Luc so she’s determined to find out if he’s the real deal, except that all that time spent with him is giving her second thoughts about her first impression of him.

DNF Review: Wild Whispers by Cassie Edwards

I really wanted this book to work because the blurb sounded so good!

Format: .mobi (A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. )
Publisher: Zebra
Release Date: September 29, 2015

Kaylene Shelton's home had always been wherever her father's carnival pitched its tents across the wild frontier. It was a lonely upbringing save for the companionship of Midnight, the black panther she had raised from a cub. But she always knew in her heart that somewhere, someone was waiting to end her deep, unspoken longing--if she could only find the dark-haired warrior she had seen in her dreams. . .

Nothing could stop Chief Fire Thunder from freeing his sister from the carnival owner who had abducted her for his sideshow. But when he laid eyes on the beautiful Kaylene, he felt it only right to steal her back to his people's hideaway. Soon, the fierce warrior knew that he was the one who had been caught--by an irresistible passion. . .

Uh, what did I just attempt to read?

Kickapoo Chief Fire Thunder and his people have chosen to settle in Mexico where they won’t be in constant danger from the changing times and prejudice in the eyes of the settlers taking over his old homeland. One day his little sister goes missing and Fire Thunder tracks her all the way to a traveling carnival where he meets Kaylene Shelton, the carnival owner’s daughter. In retaliation for the owner kidnapping his sister, Fire Thunder takes Kaylene captive. From there the two begin to fall in love.

It all sounded so interesting which is why I decided to take a chance on an author I had never read before. However my excitement quickly crumbled as I read Wild Whispers.

I couldn’t connect with either main character. They just didn’t convince me of anything. Fire Thunder spent the entire story being an unmovable force. He was never wrong in his mind yet he made questionable choices when it came to Kaylene and the safety of his people. A quarter of the way into the story and his leadership was questionable to me.

Kaylene was ridiculous. She seemed to see everything Fire Thunder did with rose colored “love goggles.” I felt she was immature and pretty useless in any kind of difficult situation. I don’t like heroines that need to be saved all the time and that was Kaylene. She was dull and all her thoughts were on Fire Thunder. I felt like I was getting a peek into a teenager’s crush addled mind. She had insta-chemistry with Fire Thunder despite his sometimes cruel treatment towards her and I didn’t learn much about her except that she felt so connected to the Kickapoo chief.

I only made it halfway into this book before I called it quits. The main characters were dull and very one dimensional and the plot offered no excitement or adventure which boggled my mind because of the era it takes place in!

Final Verdict: Wild Whispers is a reissue of an older Cassie Edwards book. While I’ve never read this author before, I don’t know if I’ll try again after this one.

2015 Year End Wrap Up + Giveaway!

Goodness gracious it’s December already! Who’s ready for Christmas? You can tell by my header that I am. Sadly, my little sister lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and I won’t be seeing her this year, or in the near future but she’s here in spirit and in my header along with my darling mother who puts up with my shenanigans and strange sense of humor.

Looking back on the year there were some highs (New Authors yay!) and some pretty bad lows. We lost our sweet Cooper boy in June and had a health scare with Mr. Pud about a month ago. We’re still hurting but we smile with joy at the memories we have of the little ninja.

In terms of books I was thrown for a bit of a loop. It seemed that a lot of my long time favorite authors just weren’t doing it for me anymore. They either started new series’ that I couldn’t get into or they changed their writing styles and in my opinion the magic of their stories was lost. I could understand one or two cases but 2015 seemed like EVERY author I had loved for years had changed and I had to “break up” with them.

But just like with every relationship that ends, there’s always a possibility for a new one and that’s just what happened this year. It was the year of the new-to-me author! This year I either fell more in love with 2014’s new-to-me authors and bumped them up to “Favorites” and “Auto Buys” or I discovered all new authors who jumped up to the aforementioned lists, much to my delight. This year’s list is slightly longer than previous years but that just means more books to love.

So, here it is, my 2015 End of the Year wrap up! My top reads of the year and ONE lucky person will get to pick which book from the list they’d like to read. Consider it my gift to you for sticking around and being lovely. In no particular order:
