Divorce lawyer Victoria Slade has seen enough unhappy endings to swear off marriage forever. That doesn't mean she's opposed to casual dating—just not with her cocky new neighbor, who is as gorgeous and tempting as he is off-limits. But once she agrees to take on his sister's case, she's as determined to win as ever—even if that means teaming up with Ford....
Investigative journalist Ford Dixon is bent on finding the man who got his sister pregnant and left her high and dry. He's willing to partner with Victoria, despite the fact that the beautiful brunette gets under his skin like no other woman. He might not be looking to settle down, but there's no denying the scorching attraction between them. Still, the more time he spends with Victoria, the more he realizes that the one woman as skeptical about love as he is might be the only woman he could really fall for…
How delicious is this? A divorce lawyer and an investigative journalist? Suddenly One Summer is a story that was just begging for some serious heat and Julie James delivered it!
Ford and Victoria couldn’t be more evenly matched, I loved that both of them were wary of the softer feelings in life but at the same time were two very kind and considerate people. They wanted to help others but didn’t think they were cut out to be happy and in love. Ford was a modern day white knight without all the dopey stereotypes. He genuinely believed in doing the right thing, even if his methods were unorthodox. Ford was funny, smart and loyal to his family, in other words, totally likable. Victoria was intelligent, bold and no damsel in distress. She had a way of meeting Ford head on, no games, no cheap manipulations just honesty about what she wanted from him and I liked that about her. Victoria’s go-get-‘em personality was part of what made her chemistry with Ford so explosive. It was that same personality that made her a successful divorce lawyer.
With two characters as lively as Ford and Victoria, there is bound to be some kind of tough background story for one of both and in this case it was both characters who had demons to face before they could fall in love. I found it interesting that both characters’ backgrounds lead them to the conclusion that they could only depend on themselves yet they both had careers where they would be helping others. Suddenly One Summer didn’t need an actual villain and I’m glad that Julie James kept it that way because their individual struggles were enough of a conflict.
Ford’s younger sister Nicole was an interesting character too. She was an adult with her own child yet sometimes had the naivety of a child herself. She was the opposite of her brother, hopeful and she believed in the good sides of people. I would love for her to find her own happiness after she’s had a chance to grow up a bit more.
Julie James is still a new to me author, I believe I’ve only read one or two other books by her and with Suddenly One Summer being the sixth book in the FBI/US Attorney series I think I’ve got a bit of catching up to do. Especially since this book rocked!
Final Verdict: Julie James put together a spicy romance with surprising depth and emotion that had me turning pages until the wee hours of the night. I regret nothing.
