What We Watched with Adria and Mr. Pud

Aside from my deep love of romance novels is my love for a good, fun TV show. I’m not much of TV watcher because I don’t like soap opera type TV shows and reality TV is a huge no for me. Though to be completely honest, I do have a fondness for the blind auditions on The Voice because I love the sarcastic banter between the coaches. Anyway, since soap opera drama and reality shows is what makes up 90% of TV these days, I am rather limited to what I watch (Unless it’s re-runs of shows from a time where creativity meant something).

However, I’ve managed to get hooked on a handful of shows that while well known, aren’t really what you’d call “mainstream” viewing. They’re more like The Little TV Shows That Could (For Now) and I thought it’d be nice to not only do a recap each week of my favorite shows as they progress but also to see if out of the new shows premiering this fall, any of them will catch my fancy. I won’t be reviewing them per say, just sharing my thoughts, questions and/or theories on that week’s episode. Nothing too long just a few quick sentences.

Obviously the season hasn’t started yet but here’s a rundown of what I hope to be recapping:

Returning Favorites:

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D – Last season had its ups and downs with new characters becoming recurring characters and the focus of the show going in too many directions. It managed to finish with what I felt was a solid closure for Skye/Daisy Johnson’s parental issues and added a few questions about her new Inhuman status. This season will see some of last season’s guest stars upgraded to full time cast members (Most notably Henry Simmons and Luke Mitchell). And a former good guy/secretly bad guy will probably erase any hope fans had of redemption and rekindling of the romance with Skye that really didn’t have much of a chance to go anywhere before it was promptly stomped on by a big, fat HYDRA boot.

My Hopes for this season: That even with the newly upgraded cast members and what I’m sure will be more guest/recurring characters, S.H.I.E.L.D won’t kill what made the show so charming in the beginning, the original cast: Clark Gregg (The lovable Coulson), Ming-Na Wen (The stoic but totally kick ass Melinda May), Chloe Bennet (The hopefully in-control-of-her-abilities Skye aka Daisy Johnson) Elizabeth Henstridge (Adorkable Jemma Simmons), Iain De Caestecker (The equally adorkable but fiercely loyal Leo Fitz) and of course Brett Dalton (Who I think does an amazing job as Grant Ward, the guy we love to hate but still kinda love). I’m hoping for more development with last season’s newbie Lincoln (Luke Mitchell), is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? Mac and Deathlok are two favorites I also want to see more of as both actors (Henry Simmons and August J. Richards respectively) play both roles with an intensity that is balanced with wry humor and badass moves.

Air Date: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D season 3 will begin on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 9 p.m Central on ABC. A late present for me since my birthday is on the 28th.

Agent Carter - The Little Show that could! In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peggy Carter was hands down my favorite. She was woman in the 1940s that was kicking ass and taking names in a time when misogyny was one of the biggest obstacles a woman had to face and she did it all without super powers or super fight training. After Captain America: The First Avenger I thought that was the last of Peggy but fast forward to January 2015 and Agent Carter was taking over SHIELD’s time slot while it was on winter hiatus. A handful of episodes were all it took to shine a bright spotlight on Peggy Carter again. I didn’t think that the show would be back after reading so many complaints about the show but thank goodness the need for a different kind of female character won out because the show is coming back this winter!

My Hopes for this season : Better storylines! I hope that season 1 laid all the ground work it needed to so that there won’t be a need for so many flashbacks or episodes designed to highlight Peggy’s capability. I, along with other viewers now know Peggy’s more than capable of doing what was considered “men’s work” in that era, so get on with the spies, lies and adventure! As much as I totally ship Peggy and Steve, it is not gonna happen so stop stabbing my poor fangirl heart with the flashbacks and the mentions. *sniff* Oh and please bring in Jarvis’ wife already! I hope she’s a badass and I can’t wait to see who they cast in the role and how her physical presence will affect Jarvis and Peggy’s friendship and missions. And while it’s well known that Peggy does eventually move on and have a family, I really don’t want that to be the focus of the show. Leave the romance in the background where it belongs, focus on the aftermath of First Avenger and Peggy’s role in founding S.H.I.E.L.D. I also wouldn’t mind seeing more of Dominic Cooper’s Howard Stark since he adds a cheeky humor to any scenes he’s in.

Air Date: Agent Carter will be back in the Winter of 2016.

Sleepy Hollow – Like SHIELD, this show had its ups and downs. I loved the modern day setting with a time traveling Ichabod. Part of the humor stemmed from Ichabod’s rants about the modern world to Abbie and her trying to help him fit in. I love the heavy paranormal aspect of the show that connects popular monsters from folklore to the biblical apocalypse that the four horsemen are supposed to usher in.

My Hopes for this season : That the show returns its focus to Ichabod and Abbie. My least favorite episodes were the ones where the focus wasn’t on Ichabod and Abbie. I mean, the show IS based on the popular tale of the same name and Ichabod IS the main character is he not? They ARE the show but I’m getting nervous with all the new names that have been tossed around (Nikki Reed as Betsy Ross, Shannyn Sossamon as Pandora) but what really concerns me is that with Ichabod technically single the writers will heed the countless fans who ship him with Abbie romantically. I swear to you this would be a HUGE mistake. Romance does NOT always make things better. One of the things that makes Sleepy Hollow such a fun show is the tight knit FRIENDSHIP between the two. Abbie is Ichabod’s guide into the modern world and I love their bickering over how modern times don’t match up to the way things were 230 years ago (In Ichabod’s opinion), it just wouldn’t be the same if they were a couple. Plus, why does there ALWAYS have to be a romance between the two lead characters?! Leave it alone people!

Ichabod and Abbie have such a huge burden to bear with them being the two witnesses to muck it up with a romance. I love the chemistry between them as FRIENDS and partners in what is shaping up to be one hell of a battle (No pun intended). They don’t need the added complications of a romance between them. People need to stop romanticizing every relationship, sometimes friends work best. If I want a romance, I’ll read my romance novels. I think I could handle the extra characters but making Ichabod and Abbie a couple? Hell no! My second hope is that for this season, the writers will stop splintering the main plot to give everyone and their grandmother their own storyline. Stick to the main group and keep the focus on one or two conflicts instead of creating half a dozen that either bore viewers or confuses them. Here’s a thought: How about focusing on Abbie’s relationship with her sister? Those two have years of conflict between them and with Abbie being a witness and the girls having powerful ancestors, do you really want viewers to believe Jenny doesn’t have some kind of abilities? And have we really seen the last of Katrina and Henry???
Sadly, with what I have seen on the show’s official Facebook page, I’m not holding out any hopes for a complete season, much less a season 4
Air Date: Sleepy Hollow season 3 will begin on Thursday, October 1, 2015

TV Show I won’t be running back to: Castle. I’m sorry folks but this show is the perfect example of how a romance can screw things up. For me, Castle and Beckett’s will they or won’t they was part of their charm and appeal. The flirting, the teasing, the hinting, the hoping. Now that they’re not only together but married, the appeal is gone. They’re no fun. I liked, no, I LOVED the tension and attraction between them when they were just partners. I tried watching the episodes after the wedding but the magic was just gone and not even Ryan and Esposito were enough to keep me entertained. I still love the entire cast, but their characters have fallen flat for me so I’ll be re-watching my dvds of the earlier seasons, when Beckett and Castle were two separate, highly entertaining entities instead of the cheesy, less entertaining “Caskett.” However I’m not completely ruling out a glance here and there to see if there is anything interesting going on.

Air Date: Castle will return on Monday, September 21, 2015 at
