LitConnect Blog Tour: When a Laird Takes a Lady by Rowan Keats (Excerpt, Review + Giveaway)

Welcome to my stop on Rowan Keats' blog tour. This tour is brought to you by LitConnect, one of my favorite tour companies. Today I have an excerpt and my review of When a Laird Takes a Lady PLUS a chance to win one of eight copies of the book itself!

About Rowan Keats:
Rowan Keats pens historical adventures involving hot Highland heroes and the women they claim. Both TAMING A WILD SCOT and WHEN A LAIRD TAKES A LADY have earned 4 1/2 star reviews from RT Book Reviews, which labelled her "a rising star of medieval romance."

When not writing, Rowan can frequently be found in a dark movie theater indulging in a large bag of popcorn, or watching the sunrise with a mug of steaming coffee wrapped in her hands. She lives in Central Canada with a goofy black lab, a very talkative cat, and a daughter whose own creative talents awe and inspire her every day.

I love Scottish heroes. They maybe a little rough around the edges, but they fight for what they believe in...and that usually involves the heroine. Any Scottish warrior is worthy of a sigh, but a Scottish laird—especially a medieval one—can truly make your heart pound. What makes a Scottish laird so interesting?

He will find his woman even in a blinding snow storm...

Excerpt
They set off again, hobbling through the drifts. The wind tore at Isabail's cloak, sapping what little warmth she had left. She supported Muirne’s weight, and they made slow and steady progress, right up to the moment they ran into a snow-plastered standing stone. Wet snow had encased the stone’s grey fa├žade completely, making it impossible to see against the background of white drifts.

Isabail’s heart thumped with excited fervor. They were indeed close to the bothy. A little to the left and through the trees and they would be there. Her legs strengthened. “I can see the door, Muirne. Don’t falter now.”

     They pressed on.

It look longer than Isabail could’ve imagined to bridge the gap, but they eventually arrived at the door. Isabail unlatched the door and they fell inside. The bothy was a primitive one-room abode with a dirt floor and no bed, but Isabail viewed it with a huge grin. Against all the odds, they had made it.

But the struggle had sapped Muirne’s last reserves. She collapsed just inside the door, sinking to the floor without uttering another word.

Isabail shut the door against the blowing snow and checked to make sure Muirne still breathed. To her relief, the woman was alive, just bone weary. Brushing the snow from her clothes, she tried to make Muirne as comfortable as possible. Then she took stock of their surroundings.

A table, two chairs, and a fieldstone hearth. Some blankets, and an iron kettle, but no food and no kindling. When her brother had been earl, the bothy had been well provisioned because he enjoyed the hunt and spent every spare moment in the saddle. Archibald took more interest in political affairs and spent much of his time in Edinburgh. A fact Isabail bitterly resented at that moment.

No fire, no food, no water. The sorry truth was, although they had succeeded in reaching their goal, they were as likely to die here as they were in the snow. Only slower.

Isabail gathered the blankets and a small pile of rabbit pelts. She covered Muirne with most of them, but kept two for herself. Unfortunately, the snow had left her clothing damp, and the chill in her flesh remained in spite of the extra layers. In desperate hope that she would find some forgotten tidbit, Isabail searched every corner of the bothy, every box and every tin.

     Nothing. Not even a crumb.

She sat on a chair and glared at the empty hearth. A cruel twist of fate to be so tantalizingly close to safety. A few logs and a piece of flint would have worked a miracle.

Muirne murmured something unintelligible, shifting beneath the blankets. Some color had returned to the older woman’s cheeks, but the tip of her nose remained bone white. Isabail knew basic healing remedies, such as willow bark tea for pain and mint for nausea, but her skills did not extend to treating severe cold. She had a sense she ought to do something more for her maid. But what? She felt so helpless. Not a common feeling for a woman who typically had three dozen gillies at her service.

She was forlornly contemplating her very limited options when the door to the bothy burst open. A very large, snow-covered figure stepped across the threshold, nearly filling the room with his broad shoulders. He shoved back his hood and stared silently at Isabail.

     She swallowed.

Dear god. It was MacCurran. And judging by the fury glittering in his eyes, cold and hunger were the least of her problems.

Review: Sinful Seduction by Katie Reus

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: April 28, 2014

As an heiress from a prominent family, Mina knows the pain of living under a microscope. Which is why she loves her sleepy Key West home where nobody knows her name. She’s determined to make her way without being coddled—and no mugging is going to change that.

Former Marine and newest Red Stone Security employee Alexander Blue has seen enough bloodshed to last a lifetime—or ten. He’s ready for civilian life, but when he sees a mysterious brunette attacked by a mugger, his need to protect kicks into overdrive. Mina, the sensual artist he saved, brings him home and bandages him up, but her gaze cuts clear to his soul. An intense connection isn’t all Blue feels—there was something strange about that mugging; he’s convinced Mina is in danger and needs his protection. Just one problem: Mina doesn’t want saving.

Whoa did I really start and finish Sinful Seduction in 3 hours? Yes I did and it was such a fun read! Technically part of the Red Stone Security series, Sinful Seduction can be read as a standalone story but that just means I can add the previous books to my wish list.

Blue and Mina are such a great couple, Mina is the more outgoing one of the two, she's had every reason to be a pampered, spoiled brat but instead she bravely wanted to be on her own and find what made her happy. I loved that about her. Blue on the other hand, has seen and done a lot in his life, a former Marine, he just wants to be a regular guy but life has other plans.

The chemistry between Blue and Mina is sexy but tender at the same time. They're fiercely attracted to one another but they also want to get to know one another. There's a magnetic pull between them that translates into a burning sexual tension.

The fast paced story and action scenes kept me reading until the last page. I liked the glimpses of previous characters that I'm sure long time fans recognized. As for myself, I look forward to getting to know them for the first time.

Final Verdict: Sinful Seduction was a quick and enjoyable read for me. If at eight books into the series it's still good, I can only imagine how awesome the previous books are.

My Reading Tid-Bit: I like to listen to classical music or movie scores when I'm reading and I found that Sinful Seductions went really well with my current musical obsession: The Captain America: The Winter Soldier score. Particularly The Causeway.

Author's Pal Blog Tour: Betting the Billionaire by Avery Flynn (Review, Interview + Giveaway)

Has anyone read Avery Flynn here? I'm going to have to put her books on my "Try More" List (I'm a compulsive list maker)! I hope you enjoy my interview with Avery as well as my review of Betting the Billionaire and don't forget to enter the giveaway! One of the prizes is a $25 Amazon gift card!

A little about Avery for starters:
Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

Book Blind Date #59

Book Blind Date is something that Danielle from Book Whore Blog and I decided to start after seeing a Facebook post on the Lawrence Public Library Page about a book blind date. This really got us thinking, what if the only thing you new about a book was what the story was about? No character names, no pretty covers to suck you in.

Here's how it works, you know the old saying never judge a book by its cover? Well you won't be able to, for this meme you are going to decide which book you would go on a "date" with based on the synopsis. Names and identifying phrases are removed just to make things fair. The only rule is: No Googling the synopsis, you have to pick a "date" based on what you read below.

Review: A Shocking Delight by Jo Beverley

Format: Bound Copy (Provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: April 1, 2014

Lucy Potter, daughter of a wealthy merchant, is more interested in trade than in the men after her dowry. When forced to have a London season, she sets out to enjoy herself rather than to find a husband. But once she meets the notorious Earl of Wyvern, her resolve weakens, and when they kiss, it dissolves—even though her instincts warn he’s dangerous.

Wyvern has a dark secret, which means he must win a rich bride. Lucinda Potter seems ideal. Not for her beauty and her lively charm, but because at first meeting she seems unlikely to realize the truth.

As he comes to know her, however, as they spar and kiss, he realizes she’s too clever and honest by far. Marrying Lucy would mean living a lie with the woman he has come to love....

I had heard a lot about author Jo Beverley's books from her fans so I was eager to give A Shocking Delight a try.

Release Date: May 6, 2014

A betrayal he couldn't forget . . .

For Nate Dean, love is a four-letter word. As part of a secret black-ops military unit, he and his brothers were genetically engineered by the government to be ruthless soldiers with an expiration date. They were loyal only to one another . . . until Nate laid eyes on the woman who stole his heart and blew his world apart. Now, years later, his family is still paying the price for his mistake. But as time runs out, there's only one person who can save his family: the very woman Nate swore he'd never trust again.

A love she couldn't deny . . .

The moment Audrey Madison spies Nate across a crowded ballroom, she can barely breathe. He's just as undeniably sexy as she remembers, yet there's an edge to him now that's as irresistible as it is dangerous. When he asks for her help, Audrey can't refuse. But she has secrets of her own--secrets that, if Nate ever discovers them, may cost them both their lives . . .

Boy those Dean brothers sure are sexy and though it may be too early to say, I think Blind Faith just might be my favorite in the series! I'll have to reserve final judgement though until the last book comes out. *whimpers*

Where do you go to escape everything when you're one of the most famous rugby players in the world? For Liam Callaghan, that place is a remote lodge on Venezuela's Caribbean coast. Perfect, except he doesn't exactly want to be alone with his thoughts. Enter Tess Chambers, the ultimate distraction.

Their time spent together in paradise is idyllic but brief—after one passionate night, Liam wakes up to find Tess gone. Returning to London, he's shocked to learn she's taken a job with his team's new sponsor. As the Legends' captain, he'll have to not only figure out how to work with the one woman who ever left him wanting more, but also convince her that their feelings in the present mean more than any lies they've told in the past.

Waiting On Wednesday: A Beast of a Book!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is: Darling Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt.

I'm a little excited about Darling Beast...

Who am I kidding? I'm obsessed with the Maiden Lane series and each book has just gotten better and better! I'll admit to a long standing curiosity/crush on Apollo Greaves from the very first time he appeared. I did a little girl squeal (not a common occurrence for me) when I found out he was going to get his own book and that The Maiden Lane series would continue on for at least a little while longer (*cough cough* Asa Makepeace). I have such high hopes and expectations for this book!

A MAN CONDEMNED . . .
Falsely accused of murder and mute from a near-fatal beating, Apollo Greaves, Viscount Kilbourne has escaped from Bedlam. With the Crown’s soldiers at his heels, he finds refuge in the ruins of a pleasure garden, toiling as a simple gardener. But when a vivacious young woman moves in, he’s quickly driven to distraction . . .

A DESPERATE WOMAN . . .
London’s premier actress, Lily Stump, is down on her luck when she’s forced to move into a scorched theater with her maid and small son. But she and her tiny family aren’t the only inhabitants—a silent, hulking beast of a man also calls the charred ruins home. Yet when she catches him reading her plays, Lily realizes there’s more to this man than meets the eye.

OUT OF ASHES, DESIRE FLARES
Though a scorching passion draws them together, Apollo knows that Lily is keeping secrets. When his past catches up with him, he’s forced to make a choice: his love for Lily…or the explosive truth that will set him free.

Review: Had to be You by Robin Kaye

Format: Bound copy (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: February 4, 2014

Slater knew tragedy from a young age, but with the support of his foster family, he turned his life around. Now, back from a stint in the Navy, he’s packed up his motorcycle and returned to Red Hook to help to run the family restaurant—a job that comes with a tantalizing upside. Her name is Rocki.

Flirty, sweet, and outgoing, Rocki brings in crowds as the lead singer of the house band. And although she’s unable to resist the charms of this intense bad boy, she refuses to open her heart to him. Until a family crisis shatters Rocki’s easygoing demeanor, exposing something from her past she’d always hoped would stay hidden.

But Slater knows a thing or two about family secrets—and he sets out to prove to Rocki that their relationship could finally give them both a future worth believing in.

Another new to me author, Robin Kaye definitely has a talent for giving her characters a traumatic past.

Review: Evidence of Trust by Stacey Joy Netzel

Format: .mobi
Release Date: April 1, 2014

Having grown up under the excessive expectations of her CEO father, Brittany Lucas is as resistant to authority as the mustang she’s training for her boss. It’s a fault that lands her in more danger than she bargains for while camping in the back-country of the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Ranger Joel Morgan is used to having the upper hand in all his cases—until he runs into the headstrong blond while investigating disturbing incidents of poaching in the park. Brittany’s imprudent lie of omission awakens ghosts in his past, making the sizzling attraction between them unwelcome.

As he searches for evidence he can trust her, the monster mutilating wildlife turns his sights on Brittany, and Joel discovers he’ll do whatever it takes to protect her—even give his own life.

Two opposite personalities drawn together by grizzly circumstances and dangerous situations? Yes please! Evidence of Trust kept me on the edge of my seat from the moment the first poaching took place, all the way to the end.
