She Needs a Hero... Abby Thompson didn't sign up to be the daughter of the President of the United States. The position was forced on her by the small matter of her birth. Preferring a quiet life of study, she's content to leave the politics and the international intrigue to her father. Unfortunately, the most powerful man on the planet is sure to make enemies. When a group of armed thugs takes her hostage half a world away, demanding the U.S. government release prisoners in exchange for her safe return, she fears her father's policy of "not negotiating with terrorists" means she'll never see the shores of the Potomac again. Luckily, there's one glimmer of hope. His name is Carlos Soto. And though she abruptly ended things with him years ago, she knows now he's the only man who can save her...
Black Knights, Inc. to the Rescue... Carlos "Steady" Soto has taken part in his fair share of dangerous missions working at the covert government defense firm of Black Knights Inc. But nothing prepared him for the emotional rollercoaster he faces when he's tasked with rescuing the only woman he ever loved-who also broke his heart. Racing against time and outmaneuvering a group of trained terrorists will take everything he's got. Plus there's the heat simmering between them which is threatening to ignite into an inferno. While ruthless enemies stalk them, they must learn to trust each other again. Even if they do make it out alive, will Abby turn her back on him... for the second time?
On the surface, Black Knights Inc is a top notch motorcycle shop but behind the scenes they’re an elite team of ex-military specialists. Carlos “Steady” Santos has been in a lot of dangerous situations over the years but having to rescue Abby Thompson is at the top of his list. Years ago, Abby not only broke Carlos’ heart but cut off any contact between them. Now, as the President’s daughter she’s been the target of a kidnapping.
Abby accepted long ago that being the President’s daughter carried certain risks but she never expected to be kidnapped and used as a pawn in a terrorist plan. When Carlos shows up to rescue her she’s not only relived but concerned. She didn’t want to end things with him all those years ago and it’s clear that there’s still sparks between them that even being in the middle of a jungle running from vicious terrorists can’t dim.
The hero of the story, Carlos, was certainly dashing enough for Abby, the heroine to fall in love with. They’ve known each other for years through Carlos’ sister. The two also share a tragedy that drastically changed their plans and their lives. That one event in their young lives also helped push Full Throttle forward in terms of the character growth and development. I found it interesting and very telling how differently Carlos and Abby handled such a loss and how even though it took them both in different directions, it eventually led them back to each other. The event that set the story in motion were well balanced and I believe that author Julie Ann Walker did a great job making sure that as a reader, I understood just how horrific that one event was without giving the entire story a depressing, morose feeling. There was plenty of humor and adventure along the way.
My only hangup with Full Throttle was with the way Abby expressed herself about Carlos. I felt that while she grew into an adult woman, where Carlos was concerned she was still an immature girl with a silly crush. The way she saw Carlos as an almost a god like figure and couldn’t seem to keep her wits about her, even when her life was in danger because of her crush was ridiculous. And that’s what it was: A crush. I couldn’t even say it changed from a crush to a real adult attraction because of the thoughts in Abby’s head when it came to Carlos. I wouldn’t have been at all surprised if she whipped out an “OMG” or the “He’s like, totally hot” when she was thinking about him. I would have liked her to be more mature and rational about her feelings for Carlos. I felt like I was watching a teenager with a crush who couldn’t set aside her hots for a man in order to focus on what was really important: Escaping the enemy ALIVE. As a reader, I need to feel that the heroine pulled her own weight in both the romance and in dangerous situations and with Abby I felt like she didn’t. She could have, but she didn’t. Shouldn’t a president’s daughter at least know some kind of self defense or how to fire a gun, especially if her work is going to take her to unstable parts of the world?
While Abby did bother me, it wasn’t enough to take away my interest in this series. I look forward to the next book in the series and to whatever adventure is in store for the next member of the Black Knights Inc team.
Final Verdict: I'm rubbing my hands together in anticipation for the next book in the series.
