In the third novel in Maya Rodale’s charming Wallflower series, London’s Least Likely to Be Caught in a Compromising Position finds temptation in a devilishly handsome stranger . . .
Miss Prudence Merryweather Payton has a secret.
Everyone knows that she’s the only graduate from her finishing school to remain unwed on her fourth season-but no one knows why. With her romantic illusions shattered after being compromised against her will, Prudence accepts a proposal even though her betrothed is not exactly a knight in shining armor. When he cowardly pushes her out of their stagecoach to divert a highwayman, she vows never to trust another man again.
John Roark, Viscount Castleton, is nobody’s hero.
He’s a blue-eyed charmer with a mysterious past and ambitious plans for his future-that do not include a wife. When he finds himself stranded at a country inn with a captivating young woman, a delicate dance of seduction ensues. He knows he should keep his distance. And he definitely shouldn’t start falling in love with her.
When Prudence’s dark past comes back to haunt her, John must protect her-even though he risks revealing his own secrets that could destroy his future.
As the only graduate from her finishing school who hasn’t married, Prudence Merryweather Payton is feeling the pressure. However, a dark event from her past has destroyed her dreams of a loving match. Forced to accept a marriage proposal out of sheer necessity, Prue prepares herself for a rather dull life, until her less than chivalrous betrothed pushes her out of a carriage in order to distract a highwayman. On her own, Prue marches towards the nearest inn and along the way meets a kind hearted stranger hell bent on helping her out.
John Roark, the Viscount Castleton may not believe he’s anyone’s hero but his actions say something different. When he meets Prue all he seems to want is to protect her. Even though he isn’t in the market for a wife and has plans and secrets of his own, almost every move from that moment on is a move to protect her. Stranded in an inn together, he and Prue begin to fall in love but secrets and dangerous enemies just might keep them apart.
What a Wallflower Wants really snagged my attention within the first few pages, with Prue’s innocence and dreams being shattered during a ball. It was such a dark way to begin a historical romance that ended up being light hearted and fun most of the time. However, even though that event in Prue’s life defined her for the longest time and warped her view of life it, it also brought forward some very realistic conflicts that victims face in today’s world. I sympathized with her immediately and no matter how many times she balked at letting Castleton get close, I never became frustrated with her, she was truly justified in her fear.
Castleton, the hero was something special. His easy going manner and gentle approach towards Prue had me falling in love with him in no time at all. He was uncommonly patient with Prue, even when he didn’t know why she shied away from him. He was intelligent enough to start piecing together Prue’s tragic past and compassionate enough to help her move past it. A physically strong alpha male hero is all good and delicious but it takes a different kind of strength to help someone like Prue and Castleton had it, making him one of the best characters in the story. He may have had his own plans for his life but he didn’t hesitate for a second to help someone in need, he’s a selfless character who hides a multitude of emotions and aspects to his character.
Because of Prue’s background, her romance with Castleton should have developed slowly and I would have understood if it wasn’t a steamy romance. However, with how traumatized Prue was at the beginning, I would have figured she would have kept Castleton at bay for a while but she didn’t and I found that a little hard to believe. Had she not been compromised the way she was, I could understand the instant love but in this circumstance, I couldn’t and felt a little let down by how fast Prue “got over” her trauma.
Author Maya Rodale took a broken young lady and set her on a journey to recover herself as a woman, gave her a chance at healing and an opportunity to fall in love with a man that far exceeded her wildest dreams. To me, if anyone deserved a love story it was Prue, though the pacing of that love story was a bit too fast for my tastes and for Prue’s background. I never read the previous books in the series but never did I feel lost or confused as this is pretty much just Prue’s story.
Final Verdict: What a Wallflower Wants had a heroine that I enjoyed, a hero I fell for and a story that entertained me and that's really all I could ask for in a romance.
