Review: A Highlander's Heart by Jennifer Haymore

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Publisher: Self Published (Jennifer Haymore)
Release Date: September 1, 2014 (Originally part of the Scandalous Summer Nights anthology)

The last time Lady Claire Campbell saw her husband, she was furious…and for good reason. She told him she hated him and never wanted to lay eyes on him again. But now he’s gone to fight a brutal battle against Napoleon and the French, and soon it may be too late for her to say she’s sorry.

Major Sir Robert Campbell never expected to see his beautiful English wife ever again. So when an apparition in her form appears on the battlefield after the bloody conflict at Waterloo, he’s sure she’s an angel come to take him to heaven.

Claire remains at her injured husband’s side, desperate to find a way to mend their broken marriage. But some wounds go deeper than blows Rob received on the battlefield. And some wounds can never be healed.

Prepare to be swept off your feet by another great series from author Jennifer Haymore!

Lady Claire Campbell deeply regrets the hurtful and hateful words she hurled at her husband just before he left to fight against the French. Never mind that she was justifiably furious at him at the time, now she just wants the chance to ask his forgiveness. Deciding she can’t just sit and wait anymore, she packs her bags and heads off into a war zone to see if her marriage can be saved.

Major Sir Robert Campbell can’t forget what his wife said to him just before he left England but he never expected to see her after the battle at Waterloo, much less picking through the actual battlefield looking for him. She says she wants forgiveness but even though he still loves her, he doesn’t trust her not to turn on him again.

Rob and Claire’s second chance romance scored big with me for a number of reasons. Rob himself was a big draw. I don’t have a lot of favorite highlander heroes but Rob definitely made the list. As brave as he was on the battlefield, he had such a vulnerable heart that had been torn to shreds by Claire’s constant rejections. What didn’t help matters was that his pride kept him from moving forward and risking his heart again. It was interesting to see the shoe on the other foot so to speak, having Rob as the emotionally vulnerable one not wanting to get his heart broken again.

Claire wasn’t the usual high born lady, from what she herself revealed, she knew she wanted Rob for her husband the moment she saw him, and wasn’t afraid of confronting her father about allowing Rob to court her. She’s stubborn and proud which lead to her estrangement from the man she claimed to love. Again, having a role reversal where Rob was reluctant to trust again while Claire was the one who had to prove herself trustworthy and let go of her pride was part of what made A Highlander’s Heart such a good read.

I’m glad that A Highlander’s Heart began with the current state of Rob and Claire’s relationship rather than at the beginning when they first meet. It kept the overall story interesting and the pace from being too slow and boring. This couple had a lot to work out and revisiting the past constantly would have left less time for their relationship to come full circle. As much passion as there was between them, I noticed that they didn’t really know each other as individuals. Jennifer Haymore made sure that these two didn’t just give into that passion and instead spent a lot of time getting to know one another. That added more emotional depth to what would have otherwise just been a reunion story.

Of course I’m interested in the other members of Rob’s Highland Knights and what role each man will be playing. They seem like a rough but fun bunch of guys who are going to need some equally rough and fun women to fall in love with.

Final Verdict: A Highlander's Heart hit all the right notes with me and I'm highly anticipating the next book in the series!

  2. I just love her books. I'm a bit behind though already. Gah it's amazing how quick that can happen. Glad to hear this new set is a big hit so far :)

  4. I know what you mean! I'm behind on Tessa Dare's new series and Sherrilyn Kenyon's latest is NOT on my e-reader.
