Review: Wind Raven by Regan Walker

Format: .mobi (provided by author in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: March 10, 2014

A British privateer and an American hoyden clash on the high seas as they tangle with a notorious pirate…and attempt to resist the rising tide of passion between them.

A PERILOUS PASSAGE

Ordered by the Prince Regent into the Caribbean, English sea captain and former privateer Jean Nicholas Powell has no time for women aboard the Wind Raven, especially not Tara McConnell. The impudent American demanded passage, and so she’ll get more than she bargained for: Instead of a direct sail to Baltimore, she’ll join his quest to investigate and neutralize the rampaging pirate Roberto Cofresi.

But the hoyden thinks she can crew with his men! And though Nick bans her from the rigging he is captivated watching her lithe, luscious movements on deck. Facing high seas, storms, cutthroats and the endless unknown, he must always protect his ship, his passengers, his crew. But on this voyage, with this woman, there is a greater danger: to his heart.

I've been reading Regan Walker's Agents of the Crown series since the beginning and while each one has a special place in my heart (and Kindle), I have to say that Wind Raven is my official favorite!

ONE NIGHT . . . ONE VIOLENT, SUPERNATURAL BATTLE . . .

AND FIVE STORIES OF THE MEN WHOSE LIVES WILL BE CHANGED BY IT.

Alec Lambert was born to lead. He’s a ruling Elder of The Brethren, possessing steely confidence, natural smarts, and decisive problem solving abilities . . . and he’s not too bad on the eyes, either. Everything in his life has gone exactly according to plan—until the night of Brahm Hill. Alec loses his best friend at the hands of the uncle he trusted like a father, along with his previously unshakable faith to lead those with whom he’s charged. Despite this, he continues to press ahead, and for his next assignment he’s asked to protect a very beautiful but very clumsy Dhampir who’s being hunted by a powerful warlock. Suddenly, he finds his whole Brethren world is turned upside down . . . and he finds himself harboring a desire for her he can’t explain.

Poppy Honeywell knows she’s far from perfect. Bad things tend to happen when she’s around. She’s more than a little clumsy, with a phobia or two mixed in. Not to mention that her name is certainly unusual. But she doesn’t have time to worry about all that because she’s on the run and not about to back down from the arrogant Elder who’s just been assigned as her protector, claiming he has all the answers to her problems. The real problem, though, is . . . she’s irresistibly drawn to this man who faces constant danger and takes charge so naturally. But Poppy also sees that taking charge of others helps Alec mask his own very deep pain.

WILL ALEC FIND HIS WAY OUT OF THE DARKNESS AND SURRENDER TO HIS FEELINGS FOR POPPY BEFORE THE WARLOCK CHASING HER CATCHES UP TO THEM BOTH?

Book One in the series Someone Else's Skye, is available now.

One night. . . One violent supernatural battle

And five stories of the men whose lives

will be changed by it.

Someone Else’s Skye – Kane, Brethren Guardian and one of the few Natural Shape-Shifters left in existence, survived the bloody battle of Brahm Hill but lost two of his closest friends. For all of his good-natured sarcasm and eye-popping good looks, Kane finds himself unable to completely forget about that night, so he seeks comfort in the one thing he is truly good at . . . sex!

This shape-shifting bad boy believes in having a good time—a very good time, usually involving some mingled heavy breathing with a sexy Dhampir in a tiny closet somewhere. But when he’s sent into the freezing tundra of the Northwest Territories to investigate a troublesome supernatural being on the loose, he ends up crossing paths with a woman who almost instantly drives him insane with want . . . because she doesn’t seem to be falling for the shifter’s charms.

It’s completely inexplicable.

Skye Matthews has a job to do, and she needs to be focused on that, not spending all her time rebuffing the advances of this way-too-cocky and handsome stranger. Yet, there is something irresistible about this self-involved playboy that Skye can’t seem to stay away from. And when the unidentified Kane is sent to investigate takes an unnatural interest in her, protecting her becomes the Guardian’s top priority.

But… can Kane save Skye from a supernatural being no one has ever encountered before?

About the Author:
Christine is a graduate of Washington State University where she received a BA in Interior Design. Book Blind Date #63 The Military Version!

Book Blind Date is something that Danielle from Book Whore Blog and I decided to start after seeing a Facebook post on the Lawrence Public Library Page about a book blind date. This really got us thinking, what if the only thing you new about a book was what the story was about? No character names, no pretty covers to suck you in.

Here's how it works, you know the old saying never judge a book by its cover? Well you won't be able to, for this meme you are going to decide which book you would go on a "date" with based on the synopsis. Names and identifying phrases are removed just to make things fair. The only rule is: No Googling the synopsis, you have to pick a "date" based on what you read below.

Last Week's Blind Dates:

Book Blind Date #1
Subject: Navy SEAL Petty Officer B**** L***

Current Status: On leave

Obstacle: The one girl who was off-limits…

Where Navy SEAL "Bad Ass" B**** L*** goes, trouble follows. Being run out of his hometown years ago for misbehaving with G**** R*****—the sheriff's daughter—was one thing. Now B**** is about to step into real danger. Not the suggestive letters he's been exchanging with G****, but the kind of trouble that can send a soldier home injured and broken inside…

G****'s entire life has been orchestrated by her family. The right job. The right friends. Enough! B****'s return offers the promise of lust-filled pleasures. Of flesh teased and tasted. She's not expecting to find a soldier with distant eyes who has secluded himself from the world. But this good girl knows exactly how to bring a bad boy back to life….

Uniformly Hot! The Few. The Proud. The Sexy as Hell.

Book Blind Date #2
C*** M******** is prepared to give his life to destroy the cartel that killed his lover, but the only way to draw them out is to present them with the perfect bait.

B******* S**** has no idea who her new neighbor is, only that her body is drawn to him in ways she can’t explain, and the danger that surrounds him isn’t the deterrent she knows it should be.

More than fireworks explode between C*** and B******* when she discovers the real reason he relentlessly pursued her, but by then it’s too late, because she’s already been drawn into a deadly game of desire, deception and revenge.

ARC Review: Riding High by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: June 1, 2014

There ain't a rider that can't be thrown. And large-animal veterinarian Regan O'Connelli was thrown hard when he discovered his fiancée with his best friend. Now he's starting his life over at the Last Chance Ranch, run by the tightly knit Chance clan. But damned if his libido hasn't perked up over the spirited redhead who looks a lot like trouble….

Lily King is the queen of anti-structure. Turns out, that makes running a horse sanctuary a challenge.

Regan's help is exactly what Lily needs—not to mention the seriously sexy sparks that are flying between them.

Now she just has to convince this fallen cowboy to dust himself off and get back in the saddle…and into her bed!

I’m still fairly new to Vicki Lewis Thompson’s books despite the fact that I read The Nerd Who Loved Me years ago. That print copy didn’t survive the new dog we found and I wasn’t able to commit Thompson’s name to memory.

Fast forward 7 years and I’m trying to catch up.

Review: Branded by Laura Wright

Format: .mobi (Provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: June 3, 2014

In the small town of River Black, Texas, sits the Triple C—a working cattle ranch that sustains the town. But it also holds painful memories and shocking secrets for the Cavanaugh brothers...

When the Cavanaugh brothers return home for their father’s funeral, they discover unexpected evidence of the old man’s surprising double life—a son named Blue, who wants the Triple C Ranch as much as they do. The eldest son, Deacon, a wealthy businessman who couldn’t wait to leave the ranch and move on with his life, is looking to use his powerful connections to stop Blue at any cost. He never expected the ranch’s forewoman, Mackenzie Byrd, to get in his way.

Mac knows Deacon means to destroy the ranch and therefore destroy her livelihood. But as the two battle for control, their attraction builds. Now Deacon is faced with the choice of a lifetime: Take down the Triple C to feed his need for revenge, or embrace the love of the one person who has broken down every barrier to his heart.

First of all, I love, love, LOVE Laura Wright’s Mark of the Vampire series to death (no pun intended) but I also have the hots for cowboys. So naturally when I found out she was writing a cowboy series, I did a happy dance. It was a bad, bad dance, but it was a dance. That’s all that counts. That and the cover for Branded is just soooo pretty *pets*

ARC Review: The Virgin's Guide to Misbehaving by Jessica Clare

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: June 3, 2014

Playing innocent is easy.

After being the quiet, shy girl her whole life, Elise Markham is ready for a mental makeover. She’s done keeping to herself and staying out of trouble—it’s time to break out of her shell and maybe meet someone intriguing in the process. So, on a photography trip to Bluebonnet, she has a whole lot more on her mind than snapping photos, especially when Rome walks into the picture.

Playing dirty is fun.

The newest instructor at Wilderness Survival Expeditions has a colorful past, to say the least. Having come from a family of notorious con artists that destroyed his credit and reputation, all before his eighteenth birthday, Rome just wants a decent job and a quiet life in a town where no one knows his name. He’s exactly the kind of bad boy that an innocent girl like Elise should stay far away from.

But Elise is tired of doing what’s right. She’s ready to throw caution to the wind—and let Rome show her just how exciting being bad can be…

I’m going to be upfront, I was apprehensive about this story. I dislike virgins in contemporary romances because while the sexual naivety that usually accompanies a virgin may work well with a historical romance, I find that it’s out of place in a more modern setting where presumably women have come a long way since the time of corsets and demure behavior.

Wow, that was a mouthful but I had to say it. Now, on with the rest of my thoughts on The Virgin’s Guide to Misbehaving.

Last Week's Blind Dates:

Blind Date #2
Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient E******** F**** finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.

The mystery of A****** L***** and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief B***** G******, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that A****** needs protection from something, G****** is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.

And A****** L*****, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

ARC Review: The Scoundrel's Seduction by Jennifer Haymore

Format: .mobi (Provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: May 27, 2014

Undercover agent Sam Hawkins has devoted his life to protecting king and country. So when he receives orders to assassinate a ruthless traitor, he doesn’t question his mission. But Sam didn’t know his deed had a witness—the beautiful and mysterious betrayer’s wife. Now he has no choice but to take her as his prisoner—one he can neither trust…nor resist.

Élise, Lady Dunthorpe, will do anything to escape her powerful captor—including seducing him senseless. She didn’t know of her miserable husband’s crimes, but she has secrets of her own, secrets that threaten everything she holds dear. With his piercing dark eyes and gentle touch, Sam inflames Élise’s deepest desires, but how could she ever trust a man who won’t let her go? Caught between the crown he’s sworn to serve and the woman he’s come to love, Sam will risk his heart—and his very life—to keep her safe.

Spies, Secret Service, Agents of the Crown, whatever you want to call them it doesn’t matter, I LOVE a historical romance with spies. I never get tired of reading them from my favorite authors or trying them from new to me authors. There’s just something exciting and more dangerous about spies in a time where there wasn’t any such thing as night vision goggles or Kevlar vests. Spies had to rely on their instincts and intelligence and trust that luck was on their side. As much as I love spies in my historical romances, I’m aware that not every author can capture my attention with their stories.

Celebrating the Re-Release of Essense of Time by Liz Crowe!

I've always been pretty vocal about my appreciation for author Liz Crowe's books. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed her books because Liz writes Romance for Real Life, meaning, her books are true to life. All the ups and downs that good times and the hard times and yes, even life's tragic ironies make it into her books. She is the only author of real life romance that I will read. Her books just have that something special that I can't stay away from.

Which brings me to Essence of Time, part of the Stewart Realty series, which I highly recommend to any one looking to try something that has very complex and controversial characters, topics and situations but also has love, warmth and passion.

Liz's books have marked quite a few "firsts" for me. My first Romance for Real Life book, my first m/f/m menage romance and with Essence of Time, my first book cry. I read and reviewed this book back in 2012 and I just couldn't say enough good things about it. I've read quite a few books in my time but through them all, Essence of Time remains one of my absolute favorites ever. There's just so much heart and emotion between the characters that even now, they're still strong in my mind.

Essence of Time was originally released in June, 2012 with a lovely cover but now it's being re-released with not only additional scenes but a new blurb and cover that I personally think is a simple but powerful representation of the story.

So please enjoy the excerpt which is RATED NC-17 for sexually explicit scene/implied ménage. I'm also giving away a copy of Essence of Time to one lucky person who fills in the form at the bottom!

About Liz:
Amazon best-selling author, beer blogger and beer marketing expert, mom of three, and soccer fan, Liz lives in the great Midwest, in a major college town. She has decades ofexperience in sales and fund raising, plus an eight-year stint as a three-continent, ex-pat trailing spouse. While working as a successful Realtor, Liz made the leap into writing novels about the same time she agreed to take on marketing and sales for the Wolverine State Brewing Company.

Most days find her sweating inventory and sales figures for the brewery, unless she’s writing, editing or sweating promotional efforts for her latest publications.

Her early forays into the publishing world led to a groundbreaking fiction subgenre, “Romance for Real Life,” which has gained thousands of fans and followers interested less in the “HEA” and more in the “WHA” (“What Happens After?”).More recently she is garnering even more fans across genres with her latest novels, which are more character-driven fiction, while remaining very much “real life.”

Withstories set in the not-so-common worlds of breweries, on the soccer pitch, in successful real estate offices and many times in exotic locales like Istanbul, Turkey, her books are unique and told with a fresh voice. The Liz Crowe backlist has something for any reader seeking complex storylines with humor and complete casts of characters that will delight, frustrate, and linger in the imagination long after the book is finished.

If you are in the Ann Arbor area, be sure and stop into the Wolverine State Brewing Co. Tap Room—but don’t ask her for anything “like” a Bud Light, or risk serious injury.

Throwback Thursday Review: A Taste of Midnight by Lara Adrian

Throwback Thursday Reviews on the blog is dedicated to those oldies but goodies that you just can't help but talk about, in a review of course! Shed some light on some of your older favorites and hopefully you'll get someone hooked on a new book, series and/or author! If you've got an oldie but goodie, share it with me! There's no such thing as "Too Many Books!"

Format: .mobi (borrowed from the library)
Release Date: December 5, 2011

A shimmering holiday gala lights up an ancient castle in the Scottish Highlands, but beautiful widowed Breedmate Danika MacConn feels alone in the crowd. Even among the friends and festivity of the Darkhaven celebration, she can't forget her lost love, a fallen warrior of the Order. Her brief return to her mate's homeland has become treacherous after rejecting the advances of a dangerous Edinburgh crime boss with a taste for blood sport.

As Danika seeks to expose the vampire and his dark trade, she discovers an unexpected ally in his forbidding, enigmatic henchman, Brannoc, a man who exudes heat, danger, and dark menace--and seems somehow achingly familiar.

Bran has his own reasons for wanting to keep Dani out of his employer's business . . . and his own secrets he means to keep buried. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a woman who tempts the wildest part of his Breed nature--especially when that woman is Danika MacConn, the one woman capable of bringing him to his knees.

I've been with the Midnight Breed since the very beginning. I remember when I saw an ad for the first book in the series and I remember meeting Danika early on. She was such a quiet character and unlike Elise (Midnight Awakening), when Danika lost her mate she was left very much alone. I was so happy to see her get a second chance at love and surprised at the connection between Danika and Brannoc.

A Taste of Midnight is a really short story that moves rather quickly and though it's part of the Midnight Breed series, aside from the heroine Danika, there's nothing connecting the events in this story to the larger one in the series.

As fast paced as this novella is, there's still plenty of heat and sexuality in both Brannoc and Danika which is always a given with a Lara Adrian story. If you're into sexy, scorching scenes with vampires, then Ms. Adrian is your go to author!

Final Verdict: A Taste of Midnight doesn't have to be read as part of the Midnight Breed series, it's a perfect standalone but fans of Lara Adrian's shouldn't miss it. New fans can pick this one up to get a taste of what the world of the Breed vampires is like and hopefully become hooked on it!

After fighting almost impossible odds, Jes and Draven are finally together, but emotions are high strung now that Asia has shown up unannounced with the intention to take what she thinks she’s entitled to, including Draven.

Dealing with the protocol of Draven’s pack leaves a sour taste in Jes’ mouth. She’s battled every inner demon she has in order to be with her man. She wants their family to be first, not second which is easier said than done when she feels Draven is choosing his pack over family.

Book Blind Date #60

Blind Date #1
M**** B****** dreads returning to her hometown of Hope for her sister’s wedding, especially knowing she’ll have to endure a weekend with the one man she never wants to see again. It’s only a couple of days, so M**** will try to forget her painful past with high school sweetheart C***** R*******. Because despite the bitter memories, she still can’t forget what they once meant to each other.

But when M**** is forced to extend her stay, C***** sees this as his second chance to do things right, to start over again with the only woman he’s ever loved. This time, he isn’t going to let M**** run. Together they’re going to confront the past and put it behind them, and hope for a future as bright as the flame that still burns hot between them.

Blind Date #2
E**** D*** has thrown himself into the role as the sixth I-Ops team member and has forged a brotherhood of sorts with the other men. When he’s asked to go on a solo mission for the PSI Branch (Paranormal Security and Intelligence) he’s not so sure he wants his old job back.

I**** N*** is a survivor, doing what she must to get by. On the run for years, from an organization she doesn’t fully understand, she tries to stay below the radar. When a blond hunk arrives and claims he’s her savoir, she suspects her luck might have finally run out. Sure, he’s hot and looks like he’d be good in bed but there is something almost magical about him that defies reality. And if there is one thing she’s learned in her life in the paranormal underground it’s you never trust a magik.

Each Monday you can join in and set up your own book blind date. Just link back to this blog and Danielle's blog. To join in just try the following.

1. Select a 2 books to be the "blind dates"

2. Set them up without the covers so readers can pick without ever seeing the beauty of the cover.

3. Star out the names. **** That way if readers have heard of the characters they aren't prejudice.

4. Link up each Monday. And post the cover to your previous weeks blind dates.

5. Join in and select which blind date you would choose in others match ups.
