Interview Time! Say 'Hello' to Niina from For the Love of Reading!

Continuing with my small attempt to shed some light on the somewhat unsung heroes of the romance community, I have an interview with the lovely Niina from For the Love of Reading who also happens to design covers for romance novels and she reads Tarot cards! I hope you'll leave Niina a comment or two!

Adria: Hiya Niina! Welcome to my corner of the world! Have a seat, don't mind the strange noises coming from the... Um, dragon in the basement. Okay it's technically my dog snoring but that doesn't sound as intimidating.

Book Blind Date #55

Book Blind Date is something that Danielle from Book Whore Blog and I decided to start after seeing a Facebook post on the Lawrence Public Library Page about a book blind date. This really got us thinking, what if the only thing you new about a book was what the story was about? No character names, no pretty covers to suck you in.

Here's how it works, you know the old saying never judge a book by its cover? Well you won't be able to, for this meme you are going to decide which book you would go on a "date" with based on the synopsis. Names and identifying phrases are removed just to make things fair. The only rule is: No Googling the synopsis, you have to pick a "date" based on what you read below.

Last Week's Blind Dates:
Sweet Revenge: A Nemesis Unlimited Novel
Tristan's Lyceum Wolves (Immortals of New Orleans Book 3)

Blind Date #1
NYPD sniper M*** D****** is in Hell. Instead of driving his best friend’s little sister home from college, he’s stuck with her roommate—a fresh-faced ray-of-sunshine with a body that makes grown men weep. There’s no way he’ll allow himself to taint the little vixen, no matter how hard she tries to tempt him, so he resigns himself to the longest—and hardest—drive of his life.

M***’s obvious attraction suits grad student L*** M**** just fine. She had no idea her brother’s best friend was so deliciously hot. Knowing he’d never have his wicked way with his buddy’s sister, she lies about her identity and seduces him. But M***’s no fumbling college boy. His desires run deep—and dark—and he wants to teach L*** what wicked really means.

M***’s demanding appetites only make L*** want more. But when her cover's blown, he’s furious—even as his hunger for her becomes insatiable. M*** can’t trust anyone, least of all himself. And he knows all too well that darkness always destroys the light…

Blind Date #2
D**** W******* is the wife of an English naval hero, daughter of a naval hero—she’s had quite enough of heroes, thank you. So when J**** A******, Southern gentleman pirate hunter and thorn in the side of the British navy, abducts her from a tedious house party and spirits her off to his ship, she lets him know what she thinks of heroes.

J**** interrogates her about the tiny island of Haven her father owns, where D**** and her father and deaf daughter retreat to escape the world. D**** resists, knowing that Captain A****** is an enemy of the English. But when A****** pins her to the wall of his cabin and asks her to sail away with him, sparks fly, and the temptation is great. But though D**** is an unhappily married woman, she has a daughter who needs her, and she refuses.

J**** knows the island of Haven holds the secret to the pirate he’s been hunting for years. He can’t bend the beautiful Lady W******* to his will, though J**** is intrigued by this woman of unquenchable fire. He lets her go, learning nothing. But he’s pleased to find himself stranded on Haven the following year, D**** W******* now a widow, and the sparks between them just as hot . . .

Review: Peyton's Ride by Jennifer James

Format: .mobi
Release Date: February 27, 2014

She's about to trade her treasured motorcycle in on a much wilder ride--Ian Coghlan.

Divorcee Peyton Reynolds is ready to escape the the judgement of a small town, bad memories of her failed marriage, and the grief of her mother's death. A month long, cross-country ride should do just the trick. One last check-up on her new cruiser has her tripping over her hormones while alone in the garage with the town's sexy bad boy, Ian Coghlan.

Tattooed, pierced, and able to shape-shift, Ian will give her the ride of her life.

Ian Coghlan knows he's nothing but disaster for a woman like Peyton. His place in the Wild Hunt and killer instincts have held him back from acting on a five-year attraction. When the curvy brunette responds to one tiny grin with a spark of interest, sockets fly out of the toolboxes and Peyton is knocked to the floor.

That month of solitude she wanted just disappeared, but the consolation prize is looking pretty...damn...hot.

With the magic of the Hunt in the air, Pixie pranks abound, and his old biker gang roars into the parking lot, dousing the heat in the garage with the cold dredges of mayhem. Peyton's life is on the line with his bad brothers' return to his world, and Ian has to decide if he can let her go or if he's willing risk her eternal hatred by changing her life forever.

I don't think I've ever read a book quite like this one before. Peyton's Ride is heavy on the fantasy element but at the same time, I was able to follow along pretty easily.

Interview with Cover Designer Crystal!

First I interviewed Sharon of I Smell Sheep fame who is now branching out as a freelance editor (Devil in the Details), now as part of the unsung heroes of the romance novel world, I'm chatting with cover designers! First up is someone I'm lucky to call a "Blogger Buddy." Crystal runs Redheads Review it Better (I choose not to take offense because I'm a brunette and Crystal's and awesome lady lol).

About Crystal:

Review: Night of Pleasure by Delilah Marvelle

Format: .mobi
Release Date: March 28, 2014

An arranged marriage is daunting, but not as daunting as seducing a spouse whose passions you do not understand...

Derek Charles Holbrook, Viscount Banfield, knew his fate since he was seventeen when his father announced his union to the
beautiful but mysterious American girl by the name of Miss Grey.
To protect the troubled estate, Derek submits to his father's wishes, not realizing he's about to entangle himself in a hell of a lot more than marriage.

Miss Clementine Henrietta Grey may be worth millions, but not a single coin has ever bought her a smidge of happiness. When she marries the charismatic and dashing Viscount Banfield, whose only strife in life appears to be the uneven seams in his coat, she finds that siring the heir he wants requires far more than her heart is prepared to give.

Unable to seduce his overly-serious and reluctant wife, Derek realizes his dreams of creating a loving family has turned into a nightmare. But with the unexpected assistance of a retired courtesan and her outrageous school, Derek and Clementine discover that passion is a language spoken not just from the body, but from the mind, heart and soul.

To me, Night of Pleasure is probably one of the few historical romances I've read that comes close to what I imagine an arranged marriage was like in Georgian London.

Interview Time with Shelley Munro + Giveaway!

I hope those of you who were on Spring Break had a good time and are as refreshed as I am! Today I have the lovely Shelley Munro on the blog talking about her latest release, Mistress of Merrivale, her homeland of New Zealand (I'm totally jealous by the way, I've seen photos and it looks gorgeous over there) and giving away a book from her extensive backlist to one lucky winner!

A marriage of convenience…full of inconvenient secrets.

Jocelyn Townsend’s life as a courtesan bears no resemblance to the life she envisioned in girlish dreams. But it allows her and her eccentric mother to live in relative security—until her protector marries and no longer requires her services.

Desperate to find a new benefactor, one kind enough to accept her mother’s increasingly mad flights of fancy, Jocelyn is nearly overwhelmed with uncertainty when a lifeline comes from an unexpected source.

Leo Sherbourne’s requirements for a wife are few. She must mother his young daughter, run his household, and warm his bed. All in a calm, dignified manner with a full measure of common sense. After his late wife’s histrionics and infidelity, he craves a simpler, quieter life.

As they embark on their arrangement, Leo and Jocelyn discover an attraction that heats their bedroom and a mutual admiration that warms their days. But it isn’t long before gossip regarding the fate of Leo’s first wife, and his frequent, unexplained absences, make Jocelyn wonder if the secrets of Merrivale Manor are rooted in murder…

Warning: Contains mysterious incidents, a mad mother who screeches without provocation, scheming relatives, and a captivating husband who blows scorching hot and suspiciously cold. All is not as it seems…and isn’t that delicious?

Review: Bite Me by Shelly Laurenston

Format: .mobi
Release Date: March 25, 2014

Livy Kowalski has no time for idiots.

When you shapeshift into a honey badger, getting through life's irritants is a finely honed skill. Until she gets stuck housing her nutso cousin and dealing with her dad's untimely and unexplained demise.

That's where Vic Barinov comes in--or his house does.

Vic can't step outside without coming back to find Livy devouring his honey stash and getting the TV remote sticky. It gets his animal instincts all riled up.

But he'll have to woo her at high speed: all hell is breaking loose, and Livy is leading the charge. . .

A honey badger shifter? Who knew they could be so complex and interesting? As a long time paranormal romance fan, I would never have even thought about a honey badger shifter as a character, let alone as one of the main characters, but with Shelley Laurenston, everything is fair game… And a gamble.

ARC Review: Hope Ignites by Jaci Burton

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: March 25, 2014

Logan McCormack likes his isolated life on the ranch, until a movie crew starts filming there.

When actress Desiree Jenkins blows into his life, she wrecks it harder than the Oklahoma winds with her brutal honesty and soft touch.

Des knows this is a temporary stay, but she loves the open freedom of the land, and for the first time in her life, Des feels like she might have found a place she can call home, with a man she might be falling in love with.

But Logan’s heart is tougher than the soil beneath them—can she convince him that they belong together?

Author Jaci Burton has another winner with Hope Ignites, the second book in her Hope series. After falling in love with Luke, Emma and their respective canine companions, I was afraid that they had set the bar too high for Luke’s brother Logan to meet.

Review: Good Faith by Liz Crowe

Format: Print (gift)
Release Date: November 14, 2013

Strong personalities—volatile marriages—stressful careers—conflicting goals—difficult children.

Contemporary challenges facing close-knit families form the crucible that forges a new generation.

Brandis, Gabriel, Blair and Lillian emerge from the entanglement of their parents’ longstanding emotional connections, but one’s star will burn brighter – and hotter – than the others.

With a personality that consumes everyone and everything in its path, Brandis Gordon struggles to maintain control as he ricochets between wild success and miserable failure. His life proves how even the strongest relationships can be strangled by the ties that bind.

Brandis and Gabe Frietag are as close as any brothers, bound by both loyalty and fierce rivalry. The strength of their ultimate alliance is tested time and again by Brandis’ choices.

Companions from birth, Blair Frietag and Lillian Robinson share loner tendencies, but come to rely on each other through adolescence. As they mature, both are forced to confront their feelings for the men they knew as boys.

Somewhere between the tangle of good memories and bad, independence and addiction, optimism and despair, the intertwined destinies of the new generation finally collide, leaving some stronger, others broken, but none unscathed.

As a chronicle of three families navigating the minefields of teen years into the turbulence of young adulthood, Good Faith holds up a literary mirror to contemporary life with joys and temptations unflinchingly reflected. Its fresh, real-life voice portrays the sheer volatility of human nature, complete with the hopes, dreams, and unexpected setbacks of marriage, parenthood and “coming of age.”

I actually finished reading Good Faith over a month ago. Yes you read that right, a month ago.

So why, you might be asking, did it take me so long to write a review?

Because this book tied me up in knots. It left me so emotional that I didn't want that to cloud my judgement over what I really thought about this book. Let me warn you now that if you're looking for a sugar coated fantasy, this is not your book! Good Faith is fiction heavily based in reality. That means the good, the bad and the ugly so consider yourself warned!

Happy Birthday Mom + Giveaway!

Today is a very special day today. It's my mother's birthday and though I'm not allowed to reveal exactly how old she is (Apparently it's a government secret), I can say that my mom is one tough lady, an excellent single mom, and one hell of a role model. She is an abuse survivor, an animal lover, a self taught knit-a-holic, a recent Acheron/Styxx fan, and a genuine Christmas Nazi (Roswell fans will understand that one). I got my sense of humor from her but she's the funniest of the two of us, as well as the one most likely to be caught dancing in her pjs in the kitchen (I have video as blackmail er, proof). She loves music and has a pretty eclectic collection on her iPod (Country, rap, r&b, spanish, classical, pop, celtic, indie, opera, soundtracks, spoof songs...) so that's where today's giveaway comes in!

Not only is today my beloved mother's **th birthday, it is also release day for Eden Summers' super sexy novella, Reckless Weekend. At least it is where I'm from ;)

Now, I've read this series from the beginning so of course I'm going to say that it's better if you read Blind Attraction (read the first chapter here) and Passionate Addiction first but it's not like you won't understand Reckless Weekend. I could go on and on about this group of dysfunctional musicians that make up the band Reckless Beat but where's the fun in that?

All I'll say is picture five hilariously immature but close friends that have been set loose in Las Vegas to celebrate the last night of freedom for their lead guitarist before he gets married. You can read my review of Reckless Weekend here.

There's no such thing as "Too Many Books!"

Release Date: January 2, 2008

It isn't easy moving about Society dressed like a dandy-especially when one is a ruthless spy. But that's precisely the latest mission for Liar's Club agent Dalton Montmorecy. Dalton is posing as Sir Thorogood, the elusive cartoonist whose scathing political caricatures have all of London abuzz. The true identity of Sir Thorogood is a mystery, and Dalton hopes that impersonating him will flush out the real menace before his cartoons do further damage to the Crown. Now, if Dalton could only find a way to get the irksome, yet oddly appealing widow, Clara Simpson, off his trail...

When Clara meets Sir Thorogood at a ball, she's certain he is an impostor-because she's the true Sir Thorogood. Secretly penning the cartoons under the frothy nom de plume, Clara hopes to save enough money so that she can leave her in-laws and find a new residence. Now she is determined to reveal an imposter's identity-and that means doing some undercover work herself. But pretending to be someone you're not has a funny way of making a woman do things she wouldn't ordinarily dream of-even if it drives her straight into the arms of her devilishly handsome adversary!

I know I keep saying this but I love historical romances with spies yet there are only a handful of them that I will re-read over and over. The Imposter by Celeste Bradley is one of them.

Book Blind Date #53

The MacGregor's Lady (MacGregor Series)
When the Duke Was Wicked (Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James)

Blind Date #1
As the eldest son of the Duke of Breconridge, H**** F****** is duty-bound to marry—and marry well. Giving up his rakish ways for the pleasures of a bride’s bed becomes a delightful prospect when H**** chooses beautiful Lady J**** Barclay, the catch of the season. But a fall from his horse puts a serious crimp in his plans. Abandoned by J**** before he can propose, the unlucky bachelor finds himself trapped in the country in the care of J****’s younger sister.

H**** has never met a woman like Lady A******. Utterly without artifice, G** is clever and capable, and seems to care not a fig for society. After a taboo kiss awakens passion that takes them both by surprise, H**** realizes he’d almost given his heart to the wrong sister. While London tongues wag, he’ll use his most seductive powers of persuasion to convince the reluctant G** that she belongs with him—as his equal, his love, his wife.

After years from home, he takes one new look at his bubbly best friend, with her lightning smarts and luscious body, and it hits him like a bolt: she’s his somebody to love and he’s not leaving town again without her.

Settling down always seemed like a time waster to Z**, a man magnet with a trail of broken hearts behind her. She’s not meant to settle down—but how can she resist someone as persuasive as J******?
