Paranormal Cravings Book Tour: Savor by Kate Evangelista (Review + Giveaway)!

About Kate Evangelista:
When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn't going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master's courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she lives in the Philippines and writes full time.

I’m Dakota Collins, a tough talking, eye patch wearing, workaholic photography student. Why am I important? Well, maybe because I get to spend an entire month with Vicious, only the sickest indie rock band out there.

You see, I needed a subject for my Spring Showcase introspective in order to graduate. During a chance encounter at a club I’d been sent to cover for the Daily Gossip, our ironically named college paper, the features writer I usually teamed up with introduced me to the band—by accident, I might add. It involved a run in with a scary, bald bodyguard. Anyway, long story short, I signed a contract to take pictures of Vicious.

I should have known their handsome yet way too serious for his own good bassist, Luka Visraya, wouldn't be able to keep his hands to himself. He’s gorgeous and all, but the way he smiles spelled trouble with a capital L. I’m in for a long month with him around.

Crazy shit happens and then some. So, if you want the skinny on Vicious and the events revolving around my stay at Lunar Manor, read my story.

I'll be honest. I kind of expected Savor to be more of a continuation of Taste rather than a completely different, standalone story that just happened to have familiar characters in it. Was I disappointed it wasn't? A little, but then something happened...

I pushed the storyline for Taste out of my mind and thought of Savor as its own book and boy did it take me for an emotional spin!

Definitely not a book for anyone under 18, Savor has some pretty graphic language and scenes that caught me off guard because it's a New Adult novel, more adult than a YA novel but not as naughty as an adult novel. Or so I thought.

Luka was positively dreamy as a lead character, the bassist in a successful indie rock band, yet his handsome face hides a very complex and often frustrating man. Much like Dakota, I didn't know if I wanted to love him or beat the crap out of him! He's got some serious issue and hang ups that aren't going to be solved overnight or by the first woman who catches his attention. At times he can be selfish, spoiled and more stubborn than a cross eyed donkey but then he can be kind, considerate and funny. It's obvious he's carrying a lot of problems around and he's not about to let any one get close enough to figure them out.

Dakota was a gamble, one that could have backfired if she didn't immediately make an impression. As a reader I've read and loved less than perfect heroines, be they "overweight," blind, deaf, crippled or weighed down with another physical condition that makes life difficult for them. However, never have I seen a heroine with an eye patch. Ever. That did take some getting used to because the author never lets the reader forget that the heroine had an eye patch, so here I was with this odd image of a girl and an eye patch. Looks can be deceiving though. Dakota has quite a few dimensions to her that made her interesting and someone I could cheer on. On the surface, Dakota seems like nothing can get her down, she's survived whatever caused her to have to use an eye patch and any conflicts or problems seem to just roll off of her. However, that just hides a terrified, lonely and grieving heart. The reason for her and Luka's behavior is never discussed in Savor but I have hopes that things will start to reveal themselves in book 2.

Luka and Dakota, while attracted to each other, don't exactly bring out the best in each other. If anything they make the other retreat farther into themselves. Another mystery that needs to be solved. They've got great physical chemistry though, it's apparent whenever they're near each other, it's just every thing else that they have to get through, which is difficult because they don't even realize what's keeping them apart.

While I like angst and emotional turmoil in my romances, Savor overdid it at times and I found myself frustrated at Luka and Dakota. The lack of answers to the question: Why are they the way they are? didn't help matters. Readers don't get much in the way of answers and I'm assuming (and hoping) that book 2 will have the answers.

Savor has it's ups and down, just like the main couple. At times it can be very frustrating and a bit confusing but then there are the moments where it's all worth it, just to see Luka and Dakota together or to see Phoenix and Dimitri again. It's best to not compare it to Taste or to even think about it while reading Savor or it will add to your confusion. I definitely want to read the second book, Relish to see where Luka and Dakota are headed.

Final Verdict: Did I like it? Yes. Did I love it? No. If you read Taste then don't think that Savor will be anything like it.
