Review: Rekindled by Kaylea Cross

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: January 16, 2014

He left her when she needed him most...

Four years ago, Dr. Grace Fallon lost everything that mattered in a terrorist attack she barely survived. Now she’s stronger than ever and in Pakistan with a UN-sanctioned team for the most important assignment of her career. She’s dedicated her life to eradicating the world of chemical weapons, and long ago accepted the inherent risks associated with her job. Until the man whose memory has haunted her for so long suddenly reappears and inadvertently makes her the target of one of the most dangerous terrorists on the planet. Forced to accept Alex’s protection, it’s impossible to deny the white-hot attraction still burning between them. And while she trusts him to guard her from this new threat, Grace must once again decide whether to risk her heart to the man who once shattered her entire world.

Now he’ll risk everything to win her back...

Four years ago, NSA agent Alex Rycroft left Grace because had no choice. But never again. Malik Hassani has escaped custody, he’s on the run, and has locked onto Grace as a means to target Alex. This time Alex will do whatever it takes to protect her—and convince her to give them another chance. Walking away from her nearly destroyed him and now that she’s back in his life, he can’t let her go. When the unthinkable happens and Grace’s life hangs in the balance, he’ll sacrifice everything to save her—including himself.

First of all, big props to author Kaylea Cross for successfully creating a romantic suspense around two older characters! Alex is in his 50s and Grace is in her mid 40s and age truly is nothing but a number in Rekindled!

Book Blind Date #49

Book Blind Date is something that Danielle from Book Whore Blog and I decided to start after seeing a Facebook post on the Lawrence Public Library Page about a book blind date. This really got us thinking, what if the only thing you new about a book was what the story was about? No character names, no pretty covers to suck you in.

Here's how it works, you know the old saying never judge a book by its cover? Well you won't be able to, for this meme you are going to decide which book you would go on a "date" with based on the synopsis. Names and identifying phrases are removed just to make things fair. The only rule is: No Googling the synopsis, you have to pick a "date" based on what you read below.

Release Date: February 1, 2011

Football pro Mick Riley is an all-star, both on the field and in the bedroom. But a sexy, determinedly single mom just might be the one to throw him off his game...

For years Mick has been taking full advantage of the life available to a pro athlete: fame, fortune, and a different girl in every city. But when he meets and beds confident, beautiful event planner Tara Lincoln, he wants much more than the typical one-night stand. Too bad Tara's not interested in getting to know football's most notorious playboy any better.

As the single mother of a teenage son, the last thing Tara needs is the jet-set lifestyle of Mick Riley; even though their steamy and passionate one-night stand was unforgettable. Tara's life is complicated enough without being thrust into the spotlight as Mick's latest girl du jour. Tara played the game of love once and lost big, and she doesn't intend to put herself out there again, especially with a heartbreaker like Mick.

But when Mick sets his mind to win, nothing will stop him. And he has the perfect play in mind.

I don't know why I waited so long to read The Perfect Play other than the fact that I really do not like sports at all. I probably would have kept ignoring this series had I not read another book by Jaci Burton (Hope Flames). I fell in love with Burton's writing style and her characters and like a cat, my curiosity got the better of me.

Interview Time! Sharon Stogner from I Smell Sheep Branches Out!

I wanted to do something a little different on the blog this year and shine the spotlight on some of the unsung heroes of the book world. I'm talking Freelance Editors, Cover Designers and even Swag Designers (Swag doesn't make itself you know). If you do one or more of the above, let me know I'd love to have you on the blog!

Kicking off my Unsung Heroes Interviews is someone many of you may know. She's talented, funny and oh so nice. She's an infamous blog owner*wink* and now she's branching out into the editing world! In case you don't know about Sharon Stogner, here's a quick bio in her own words:

I started blogging/reviewing 4 years ago. In 2010 I became the other half of I Smell Sheep with Katie Dalton. We love anything and everything paranormal romance/Sci-Fi/UF/Horror/mystery/fantasy, you name it we are either reading it or watching it. My favorite genre is Urban Fantasy, the darker the better.

I was a
beta reader in a wide range of genre
for a couple of years. Encouragement from the authors I worked with convinced me to
become a freelance editor at the end of 2013.

I received an undergraduate degree in biology from UNC Chapel Hill and a master’s degree in Microbiology from NCSU. I have been married for 21 years and chose to be a stay at home mom for our two girls who are now 12 &18. I am a 2nd degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. I rarely cook, which my family is grateful for. I love cereal and spaghetti, but not together.

Find Sharon:

Adria: Hi Sharon, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me. Sit back, get comfortable and don't mind the wacky noises coming from the other room, that's just my pet dragon. *grins*
Sharon: Ooo! We have a dragon over in my blog’s FB group. His name is Jake and he tends to set the newbies on fire.

Review: The Smuggler Wore Silk by Alyssa Alexander

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: January 7, 2014

After he is betrayed by one of his own, British spy Julian Travers, Earl of Langford, refuses to retire without a fight, vowing to find the traitor. But when the trail leads to his childhood home, Julian is forced to return to a place he swore he’d never see again, and meet a woman who may be his quarry—in more ways than one.

Though she may appear a poor young woman dependant on charity, Grace Hannah’s private life is far more interesting. By night, she finds friendship and freedom as a member of a smuggling ring. But when the handsome Julian arrives, she finds her façade slipping, and she is soon compromised, as well as intrigued.

As she and Julian continue the hunt, Grace finds herself falling in love with the man behind the spy. Yet Julian’s past holds a dark secret. And when he must make a choice between love and espionage, that secret may tear them apart.

As far as a historical romance goes, The Smuggler Wore Silk was written well enough and for a debut novel it worked in a lot of places. The plot was enjoyable while the characters kept things moving along. I enjoy spy romance novels, especially historical ones so I was eager to give this particular book a try.

ARC Review: When the Rogue Returns by Sabrina Jeffries

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: January 21, 2014

Victor Cale never imagined his sweet, shy wife, Isabella, would use her talent for creating exquisite imitation jewels for criminal pursuits. But there’s no denying it was Isa’s handiwork that turned up in the brazen heist of the Dutch royal family’s diamonds after she disappeared into the night.

Ten years later, still reeling from her betrayal and enraged that her duplicitous side was so undetectable, the sexy investigator heads to Edinburgh, where his cousin Maximilian has landed him a job tailing a wealthy baron’s bride-to-be. Simple enough—until the “fiancée” in question proves to be Isa, masquerading as an alluringly eligible young widow.

No longer the meek and mild girl he once knew, the bold woman vehemently asserts that it was Victor who abandoned her. Piecing together the past to prove Isa’s innocence reawakens a volatile passion, hotter than ever. With a decade of secrets between them, Victor and Isa must trust each other in order to bring the scheming thieves to justice–without getting burned themselves.

What does it say about a reader when she prefers a rough around the edges former soldier to a duke? Sorry Max, you may be a duke but this particular reader has developed a crush on the enigmatic Victor Cale! I’m also going to just mention how gorgeous the cover is too! It’s only fitting that my favorite book in the series (so far) is in my favorite color, blue.

Picking up where the first book in the series left off, When the Rogue Returns focuses on Victor Cale, the long lost cousin of Maximillian Cale, the Duke of Lyons (What the Duke Desires) and his quest to find his traitorous wife. Years ago, Victor’s wife, Isa and her family disappeared after stealing a very valuable piece of jewelry and left him to shoulder the blame. Now, as an investigator and the duke’s cousin, he has the means to track her down. When an investigation reveals the bride-to-be of a young baron to be none other than Isa, Victor is determined to get the answers he’s been waiting for.

Release Date: October 1, 2013

Review: Christmas Fantasy by Siren Allen

Format: .mobi (purchased)
Release Date: December 8, 2013

One bite was all it took.

It’s that time of year again. Alyssa Blakely is busy writing in her fantasy diary, filling it with all her forbidden, sexual fantasies. The star: her very sexy boss, Devin Jordan. Too bad for her, he’s never given her a second glance.

Or so she thought…

After a steamy kiss under the mistletoe and a night of wild sex, Alyssa has the bite to prove just how wrong she was.

Devin Jordan has found his mate. The only problem: she’s human. He’s not. Can he prove to her that his inner beast can be both naughty and nice? Or will her fear of the unknown keep him from claiming her?

I finally made time to buy and read Christmas Fantasy by Siren Allen and I'm so glad I did! I know the holidays have already come and gone but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying this story. At around 126 pages, it's not a full length novel but it didn't feel like a "half story" either. I was very pleased with the length and the pacing of the story. It was fun, erotic and addictive.

Release Date: December 22, 2013

Sassy, smart, and sexy, former supermodel-turned-tech guru Rubi Russo has it all—looks, money, confidence and freedom. Her life is a whirlwind of fast cars and fleeting affairs—and she likes it that way. With a past like Rubi’s, forever isn’t part of her vocabulary. So when studly Renegade stuntman Wes Lawson wants to take their friendship to the next level, she’s all out.

Raised a simple country-boy, Wes knows the brazen Rubi isn’t his type. But after spending time with her, he discovers she’s everything he’s ever wanted in a woman. To win her wild rebel heart, he’ll have to prove he sees behind her smokescreen to all the goodness she tries to hide. Then it’s just a matter of crushing her fears, shattering her barriers, and convincing her that loving him is everything she’s been missing in her life, too.

Piece of cake.

Rebel is one hot, erotic ride and I just couldn't put it down!

As Shane struggles to unravel his past, dangerous new truths come to light. Can he protect the only woman he's ever loved? Yeah I know, I read them out of order. Bad me. However in my defense, I caught the second book on NetGalley first and since I really wanted to try this series I broke my own rule and said "F**k it, I'm going to request it!"

Paranormal Cravings Book Tour: Savor by Kate Evangelista (Review + Giveaway)!

About Kate Evangelista:
When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn't going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master's courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she lives in the Philippines and writes full time.

I’m Dakota Collins, a tough talking, eye patch wearing, workaholic photography student. Why am I important? Well, maybe because I get to spend an entire month with Vicious, only the sickest indie rock band out there.

You see, I needed a subject for my Spring Showcase introspective in order to graduate. During a chance encounter at a club I’d been sent to cover for the Daily Gossip, our ironically named college paper, the features writer I usually teamed up with introduced me to the band—by accident, I might add. It involved a run in with a scary, bald bodyguard. Anyway, long story short, I signed a contract to take pictures of Vicious.

I should have known their handsome yet way too serious for his own good bassist, Luka Visraya, wouldn't be able to keep his hands to himself. He’s gorgeous and all, but the way he smiles spelled trouble with a capital L. I’m in for a long month with him around.

Crazy shit happens and then some. So, if you want the skinny on Vicious and the events revolving around my stay at Lunar Manor, read my story.

I'll be honest. I kind of expected Savor to be more of a continuation of Taste rather than a completely different, standalone story that just happened to have familiar characters in it. Was I disappointed it wasn't? A little, but then something happened...

Book Blind Date #46

ARC Review: Hope Flames by Jaci Burton

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: January 7, 2014

When it comes to love, they already know the rules…by heart.

Thirty-two and finally setting up her veterinary practice in the town she once called home, Emma Burnett is on her own and loving it. Independent and driven, she’s not letting any man get in the way of her dreams. Not again.

That’s fine with Luke McCormack. Divorced and hardly lacking in female company when he needs it, he’s devoted to the only faithful companion in his life—his police dog. Still, there’s something about Emma he can’t shake.

When a series of local break-ins leaves Emma vulnerable, she seeks help from the first man to spark her desire in years. And now they’re giving each other something they thought they’d lost forever… hope.

* There is a minor spoiler (which is blocked out) that reveals one of the canine characters' breed.

Excuse me while I try and contain the big smile that Hope Flames left me with. Yes, this book is a keeper for me, the next book in the series is on my radar and author Jaci Burton is now on my "watch" list.

ARC Review: The Expert's Guide to Driving a Man Wild by Jessica Clare

Format: .mobi (provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review)
Release Date: January 7, 2014

Being out of control…

The product of a rigid upbringing, Brenna has grown into a sexy free spirit who does things her way. No possessions, no debt, no man, and no rules to tie her down. And if she has to work, what better way than as assistant in a wilderness expedition team? So many opportunities to go wild.

…can be risky when you’re falling in love.

One person who doesn’t “get” Brenna is her boss, Grant. He prefers order and emotions kept in check, which means Brenna loves to push his boundaries. He’d be impossible to work for if he wasn’t so infuriatingly hot. But when his overbearing, matchmaking mother arrives in town, Brenna volunteers to be Grant’s pretend girlfriend. After all, it’s the perfect opportunity to drive Grant crazy at every turn.

Brenna’s just a little surprised when Grant agrees to her wild, impulsive schemes. And she’s more than a little surprised when their games take them to the bedroom.

The third book in the Bluebonnet series was worth waiting for! I've loved this series since the beginning, it's a satisfying blend of sarcastic, dirty humor and likable characters.
