My Favorite Author: Gaelen Foley + Giveaway

Welcome! This is a new, monthly feature here on the blog. Every month I talk about one of the authors on my list of "Favorites." I'll tell you why they're one of my favorites and in some cases, how I discovered them. Then, as my gift to you, I will give you a chance to win your choice of e-book by that month's author. At the end of the month I will chose one person and they will get to pick what book they'd like. So read on and don't forget to fill out the rafflecopter form at the end!

Author Gaelen Foley
I've always loved books. It's my mother's fault, she read to me and my sister almost every night, encouraged us to read on our own and ALWAYS said yes when the Book Fair came around at school. As an adult, I chose to read romance novels because of the light hearted, happy feeling one gets after two people in love get that happy ending. Each romance novel on my e-reader is special to me, but Gaelen Foley's books have a special place in my heart for a very personal reason.

You see, I suffer from depression. I have since I was 14. My mother and I also spent 21 years in a volatile, unpredictable and verbally abusive household. Long story short, she finally had a way out in 2007 but it left us financially unstable and to make matters worse, at 21 years old, my depression was at a high point. Now any one with depression or who has a loved one with severe depression knows what its like to feel that way, or to watch someone they love struggle with daily activities and chores. Well that was me. My eating and sleeping habits were terrible, I weighed only about 100 pounds and was doing my best to keep outsiders from finding out just how bad things were.

In 2009, on one of the rare times I joined my mom on a trip to Target, she told me to go look at the books and to pick one out because I needed something to do while she was at work besides sleep. My mom's a stubborn woman so I knew she wouldn't let me leave unless I picked a book so I did as she said. Scanning the dozens of books on the shelves, my eyes kept coming back to one book. It was My Wicked Marquess by Gaelen Foley. I hadn't been doing a lot of reading at that time so I didn't know who Gaelen Foley was. I picked up the book, and read the blurb but before I could make a decision, my whirlwind mother snatched the book and said "Okay I'll get you this one, it will be your birthday gift."

Sadly, it took me a few more weeks before I dragged myself off the couch and opened the book to the first page. My mom wanted to know what the book was about, her sneaky way of making sure I actually read the book. After only a few pages, my interest was piqued. Spies in Regency England? It quickly became clear that My Wicked Marquess wasn't just a run of the mill historical romance novel, this book had action in it! I've never been a girly girl so this was a plus, I liked the mystery of trying to guess the villain's next move, all the while anticipating that moment when the hero and heroine realize that they just might be in love with each other.

Within three days I had finished the book and I wanted to know, who was Gaelen Foley? When I was able to get on the internet, I Googled her and found that My Wicked Marquess was the first book in a new series that centered around a secret organization that posed as a notorious club for notoriously scandalous men, who were in fact, spies. The next book in the Inferno Club series wasn't due out for a while but I noticed that Gaelen had a backlist of books. After calling several used bookstores (okay more like 3, there aren't that many) I found one that had all of her previous books. Guess what I got for Christmas?

Without even noticing, I had something to look forward to, exciting stories that took place in one of my favorite time periods. The characters were memorable, passionate and intelligent. I found myself thinking about each book I read long after I had finished. I smiled, I laughed and I thoroughly enjoyed myself for the first time in a while.

Perhaps it's not really a big deal to other romance fans, but for me, who, now that I think about it, was slowly giving up, Gaelen Foley's books represent a small light at what was a dark time in my life. Yes, I had my beloved dog (the infamous Mr. Pud, who now enjoys just snuggling while I read), who I know kept me from doing something foolish, but my mind, my imagination, and my love for books wasn't there.

I did (kind of) get to tell Gaelen herself how much her books meant to me. There was a giveaway for a signed book from another author (who is also one of my favorites), Alexandra Hawkins. Gaelen had interviewed Alexandra and entrants had to leave a comment. That's when I briefly told her that her books helped me get through some tough times. Not only did I get a response from Gaelen, I won the signed book (Alexandra Hawkins was the first author I got a personalized, signed book from) and that's when I decided I wanted to try and collect signed, personalized books from all my favorite romance authors.

So there you have it, the very short version of why Gaelen Foley is, and always will be one of my absolute favorite authors ever. I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the Inferno Club series, My Notorious Gentleman (and anything else Gaelen Foley wishes to contribute to the romance novel community.

And in case any of you are wondering, yes I still battle depression to this day. My mother and my situation hasn't improved much since 2009 but I am getting a little help from a program here in my city. It's a daily struggle that I try to keep away from my blogging and my friendships with other bloggers, but it is always there. So that is why I am grateful that authors like Gaelen Foley share their stories with the rest of us, I don't know if authors know how much their books mean to some of their fans. Sometimes their books are the difference between looking forward to tomorrow and staying stuck in the past.

  2. Adriana you have me tearing up over here. Thank you for sharing that bit about yourself with us. I'm so glad your mama got out of that relationship and that she's a pushy one and got you reading again :) It's really amazing the things books can help us get through. I hadn't heard of this author before but will definitely give her a read.

  6. You'll love the rest of the series. My favorite so far has been the fourth book, My Ruthless Prince. That one was definitely the darkest of the whole series.

  8. I've read the first 2 books in the Inferno series so far and have books 3 and 4 lined up in my TBR pile! As much as I enjoyed My Wicked Marquess, I thought My Dangerous Duke was pretty epic, really anxious to get going on my reading :)

  10. Argh - not sure if my original post showed up or not! My start in Ms Foley was her Knight series. Lucian's to be exact. Ahhh the knight twins. I remember going to a flea market and they had like five for a dollar special. Well they had quiet a bit of Foley's books in there. So I bought Lucian's and the entire princess trilogy. I came home, devoured Lucian's book and had to go back to the flea market to get his twin's book (I remembered seeing it) and their duke brother's book.

Been following her ever since. Sadly I cannot find my copy of Jack's book. I know I anticipated that one. I even read the cousins books. I have My Wicked Marquess and My Irresistible Earl in the to read list... writing takes out of a person.
