The Challenges of Writing Historical Romance Versus Romantic Suspense
By Kaylea Cross
Since I normally write romantic suspense, and military based romantic suspense at that, switching gears to an historical romance was tricky. One of the obvious things that I had to work around was the history surrounding the framework of my story. Luckily I love doing research, and for The Vacant Chair I really went all out, even more so than for any of my other books. I not only read dozens of titles about the cavalry and medicine during the war, along with plenty of primary sources, I actually dragged my hubby (then boyfriend) back east to Virginia to tramp all over the battlefields my character, Captain Justin Thompson of the 5th Michigan Cavalry, fought on. And I loved every second of it. Hubs, not so much, but he was a trooper and stuck with me.
By far the most challenging thing was working within the constraints of history. I tried really hard to be as historically accurate as possible in this story and weave my plot around important dates and locations, rather than keep it vague. I’m quite proud of the result and I hope my readers will learn a lot as they progress through the book.
The other tricky thing for me was the language used in the writing itself. I naturally have a contemporary voice so as my editor and I went through the manuscript we caught anachronisms from time to time that had to be changed, or little things in dialogue that didn’t sound right for the period. I’ll admit my “voice” isn’t a true historical one, but I think the story makes up for that. (At least, I hope it does!)
More than anything, I was just plain excited to get this story down after all that work with the research! I’ve done my best to honor the men of the 5th Michigan Cavalry and tell their amazing account of the latter stages of the war within the pages of the love story I’ve woven.
I hope you enjoy The Vacant Chair!

The Civil War has torn Brianna Taylor’s family apart and made her a widow. Determined to ease the suffering of the wounded crowding the Union hospitals and honor the memory of the man she loved, she embarks on a career as a nurse. But then he arrives—a patient who makes her feel alive again in spite of her resolve to stay detached.
Captain Justin Thompson understands the cost of war all too well, yet he felt compelled to fight for the Union his father died defending. Wounded at Cold Harbor and left to die at a military hospital, he owes his life to Brianna, who seems determined to guard her professional boundaries despite his best efforts to breach them. Just as he’s winning the battle for her heart, he’s forced to return to the front of a cruel war that could very well separate them forever.
