Author of the Month: Elizabeth Hoyt

The first time I picked up an Elizabeth Hoyt book was back in 2009 and it was To Desire a Devil. I was just getting into historical romance and really didn't know about any HR authors out there at the time. So I bought the book, only to realize that it was the last in a series. Now, I hate to read books out of order and avoid doing so unless absolutely necessary. In this case, I was not about to read To Desire a Devil without having read the previous books first. So I bartered (yes, you read right) a ride to the closest used book store and thank the book gods, that store had the books I was looking for. I returned to the "house" I was living in and began the first book in the series, To Taste Temptation and finished it in a few hours.

After I finished, two things stood out about it, one, it had some of the hottest sex scenes I'd ever read (very earthy and primal, RAWR lol), and two, while introducing the hero of the next book in the series, one Jasper Renshaw, Viscount Vale, Elizabeth Hoyt did something I'd never seen in a romance novel before. She described the hero as *gasp* not handsome! For me this was unheard of! ALL the characters in romance novels were supposed to be physically perfect characters right?! Who ever heard of a hero with a long, thin face and a too-large nose who's "eyes drooped at the corners rather like a hunting dog's"? Certainly not me, even though I'll admit, it was a relief to not have such perfection in a novel.

Curiosity kept me reading the next book in the series to see how exactly Ms. Hoyt was going to take a character she previously described as not handsome and make him appealing to readers and the heroine, who was rather plain herself. Before I knew it, I had read through to the last book in the series and was instantly a fan. I loved Elizabeth Hoyt's characters, they were heroes and heroines without having to be these untouchable, unbelievably, gorgeous men and women. Some characters were attractive, some were not, all were scarred on the inside, some were horribly scarred on the outside as well, but she made me, as a reader, root for them to find that happy ending.

Fast forward a few years and I'm eyeballs deep into the Maiden Lane series. Just when I thought it couldn't get better than the Four Soldiers series, I read Scandalous Desires, then Thief of Shadows and finally, with the help of NetGalley, Lord of Darkness. Good grief my little heart almost couldn't handle the action, adventure, mystery, angst and yes, passion that those three books EACH have. I mention those three because I honestly cannot pick which one I love more. They are honestly some of the most romantic and entertaining books I have ever read, and I've been reading romance novels for over 10 years.

Elizabeth Hoyt's contributions to an already huge genre stand out because of her uniquely ordinary characters, who, in my opinion, bring more to readers who may find physical perfection a little intimidating.

I could go on and on forever about how great her books are but I won't. You'll just have to pick up any of Elizabeth Hoyt's books and you'll see why she's on my "Absolute Favorite Authors" and "Authors I'd Love to Have Signed Books From" lists.
